All information is complete
to and including England's last match, the fourth of the 2021-22 season, against
Andorra on 9 October 2021
Diary
Tuesday, 28 September 2021 - Harry
Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold are set to miss England's upcoming
World Cup qualifiers. Centre-back Maguire is facing 'a few weeks' out
with a calf injury, says Manchester United. Alexander-Arnold has a
groin issue.
Thursday, 30 September 2021, 2.00pm - Gareth Southgate's names his 23 man squad for the upcoming World Cup
qualifying matches against Andorra and Hungary. He has recalled
defender Fikayo Tomori, who last played for England in November 2019,
striker Ollie Watkins, who has not featured since being cut from the
Euro 2020 squad, and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who was a member of
that Euro 2020 squad. Manchester City's Phil Foden also returns after
a foot injury.
Friday, 1 October 2021 - Chelsea
manager Thomas Tuchel expects Reece James to miss England duty through
injury despite being selected. 'When I saw it I thought that maybe
Reece goes with the water polo team for England, because right now he
trains in the pool. So I was a bit surprised, but I understood that he
was selected for the football team. This will not happen because Reece
is training in the pool right now. So my understanding, my last
information is that he will not go. So that can only be a
misunderstanding, noting else.'
Monday, 4 October 2021 - As
expected, Reece James had withdrawn from the England squad, instead,
his Chelsea teammate has earned a recall. Ben Chilwell was part of the
Euro 2020 squad, but was never called upon to make any appearance.
Also drafted in is their former teammate, Tammy Abraham, who now
plays for former Chelsea FC manager, José Mourinho, at AS Roma. The pair
will join up with the rest of the squad tomorrow.
Tuesday, 5 October
2021 - Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has replaced
the injured Kalvin Phillips in the England squad. Phillips has
withdrawn after picking up a calf injury in Leeds United's win on
Saturday against Watford. Ward-Prowse is part of the 24 man squad
arriving at St. George's Park.
Thursday, 7 October 2021 - After
another morning training, the England squad leave for Andorra.
Friday, 8 October
2021 - The England team are training at the Estadi Nacional in
glorious sunshine. However, three hours after leaving the pitch, a
fire broke out on the television gantry. One of the dugouts had
melted, while the video assistant monitor had been left burnt and
walls blackened by the blaze. The fire service put the fire out, but
the extent of the damage is not known. FAF confirmed that the match
tomorrow will still go ahead.
Saturday, 9 October 2021 - England
took another step towards confirming qualification for the 2022 World
Cup in Qatar with a predictably easy victory in Andorra. England
rested their big guns such as captain Harry Kane, with Phil Foden
outstanding, they had far too much for Andorra and quickly established
their superiority. Foden played in Jaden Sancho to set up Ben Chilwell
for his first England goal after 17 minutes, then the Manchester City
youngster delivered the perfect pass for Arsenal's Bukayo Saka to
score a second five minutes before the break. Tammy
Abraham was desperate to get on the scoresheet after his good form
with Roma won him a recall, then a start with Kane on the bench and
Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured, and he was on the mark when
he stole on to Sancho's cross to score on the hour. James Ward-Prowse
added England's fourth late on, scoring from a rebound after his
penalty was saved by Josep Gomes, before Jack Grealish produced a solo
effort for his first international goal from goalkeeper Sam
Johnstone's superb throw. It was also significant game for Ukrainian
referee Kateryna Mozul, who became the first woman to officiate a
senior England men's game, and exercised excellent control throughout
in an occasionally spiky encounter.
