England's Team Honours

World Cup

England won the 1966 World Cup final tournament on home soil, beating West Germany in the final match, 4-2 after extra time.

England were a semi-finalist at the 1990 World Cup final tournament in Italy, eliminated by West Germany on penalty kicks after a 1-1 extra-time draw.  They finished fourth after losing the third-place match to host nation Italy, 2-1.

European Championship

England were a semi-finalist at the 1968 European Championship final tournament in Italy, losing to Yugoslavia, 1-0.  They finished third after beating the U.S.S.R., 2-0, in the third-place match.

England were a semi-finalist at the 1996 European Championship final tournament on home soil, eliminated by Germany on penalty kicks after a 1-1 extra-time draw.  They finished level at third-place with the other eliminated semifinalist, France, since no third-place match was played.

British Championship

Minor Tournaments and Cups

England won the 1986 Rous Cup on home soil and the 1988 and 1989 Rous Cup Tournaments staged in England and Scotland.

England won the 1991 England Challenge Cup Tournament on home soil.

England won the 1997 Tournoi de France in France.

Fair Play Awards

England won the Fair Play Award at the World Cup 1990 final tournament in Italy.

England won the Fair Play Award at the European Championship 1996 final tournament on home soil.

England shared the Fair Play Award with host nation and champions France at the World Cup 1998 final tournament.

Team of the Year Awards

BBC Sports Team of the Year Award

England won the BBC Sports Team of the Year award, first made in 1960, once, in 1966, the year they won the World Cup.  

England's Youth Football Team took the award in 1964 after winning two successive UEFA European Under-18 championship tournaments in 1963 and 1964.

British Sports Writers' Association Team of the Year Award

England have never won the Sports Writers' Association Team of the Year award, which was first made in 1970.  In 1966, however, Bobby Moore and the entire England World Cup Team won the Association's Sportsman of the Year award.

FIFA World Team of the Year Award

FIFA first made its Team of the Year award in 1993, when it began its regular national team rankings.  From 1993 until 2000 the awards were made on the basis of the December end-of-year ranking.  England finished among the top 10 teams twice, in 1997 and 1998, on both occasions under manager Glenn Hoddle.  In 1997, they were 4th, behind award-winner Brazil, Germany and the Czech Republic and ahead of Mexico, France, Romania, Denmark, Italy and Colombia.  In 1998, they were 9th, behind award-winner Brazil, France, Germany, Croatia, Argentina, Yugoslavia, Italy and the Czech Republic and ahead of Mexico.

Achievement Awards

Professional Footballers' Association Merit Award

The Professional Footballers' Association gave its Merit Award, established in 1974 to recognise outstanding achievement or service in football, to the England 1966 World Cup squad in 1986.
