Seven wins in a row had suddenly catapulted Stoke into serious title contenders, and they went into the last match in mid-June, needing to win at Sheffield United to win the championship for the first time. They lost and it was Liverpool who won an incredibly tight title race. Stoke finished fourth, just two points behind them.

Doncaster clinched the title, three weeks later, with victory at Bradford. Rotherham had won every home game at this point, and went on to win 13 games out of 15, but it was all too late, as they could not catch their West Riding of Yorkshire rivals and it was to be the first of three consecutive runners-up placings in their quest for a first-ever promotion.
