Tottenham had already clinched the second-division title, a week earlier, so attention shifted to the titanic battle for the second promotion place between the three clubs directly below them. Sheffield United won their last three games and although Southampton drew level on points with them, it was Sheffield Wednesday who contested a goalless draw with the champions (who failed to win any of their last five games) to take the runners-up spot on goal average from their two rivals. United lost out to their near neighbours by 0.008 (or 1/125th) of a goal. In reality, if Wednesday had drawn 1-1 with Spurs, there would have been a promotion play-off between the two Sheffield clubs. Twelve months later, Wednesday were relegated from the first division on goal average.
