Liverpool earned a point away to the leaders in the biggest game of the day, but their first dropped point in seven games left them needing to do too much with one game remaining. Seven days later, Blackburn won 4-3 at Charlton and pipped them to the second promotion place behind champions, West Ham.

Plymouth completed their fixtures still on top, but Brentford and Brighton could still catch them, and did. Brentford beat Brighton to go ahead of both Plymouth and Brighton on goal average, but Brighton put six goals past Watford, two days later and timed their finish to perfection. Plymouth won the new third-division championship, twelve months later.

Scunthorpe were in the midst of a run of three defeats in four games which allowed Accrington to close the gap, but they rallied to win their last four games, as Accrington stuttered. It was Scunthorpe's first-ever promotion, in their eighth season as a league club. York City missed out on a place in the new third division by 0.073 of a goal behind Wrexham, but they did win promotion from the new fourth division in its first season.
