World Cup Finals in South Africa
25 Fabio Capello named a squad of thirty players, including Darren Bent, Ashley Cole, Jermain Defoe, Rio Ferdinand, Emile Heskey,   Tom Huddlestone, David James, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott and Shaun Wright Phillips, on 11 May 2010, for two warm-up games, against Mexico and Japan. With the squad preparing to fly out to South Africa for the tournament, seven players were removed from the list on June 1 including Bent, Huddlestone and Walcott. Then, on the very first day of training in South Africa (June 4), England captain, Rio Ferdinand damaged his knee ligaments and was ruled out of the tournament. 34.8% or one in three squad players were BME.
