England have yielded three or more goals most often to the
other home countries, Scotland, 21 times, Wales, 6 times, and Northern
Ireland, 5 times (6 times if united Ireland is included). They have, of
course, played these countries far more than any other opponents.
Among countries outside the United Kingdom, Austria and
Portugal have scored at least three goals against England most frequently,
each accomplishing the feat four times. However, the lead goes to
Germany if West Germany's total is tacked on. England have yielded three
goals to German opposition six times, three times to united Germany and three times
to West Germany.
Of England's South-American opponents, Brazil leads the
way, having scored three or more goals on three occasions.
Opponents from North America, Africa and Asia have
never scored as many as three goals against England. The same was true
of Oceania until Australia's 3-1 victory in England in early 2003.
England won three and drew two of the 14 matches in which
they conceded four goals. And they won 12 and drew six of the 51 matches
in which they gave up three goals.
