Left:
A spiky-haired Guy Mowbray before the 2006 World Cup. Eight years earlier,
at 26, he had been the youngest-ever commentator at a World Cup Final,
whilst working for Eurosport. After a spell at ITV, he switched to the BBC
when the corporation regained the rights to Saturday-night highlights of the
FA Barclays Premiership, and he began the 2010s as the successor to John
Motson in the coveted first-choice position, though his England commentaries would be limited to
the major tournaments.
The second half of the first decade of the twenty-first
century was a period of technological change, together with major changes in
England's television broadcasting contracts with two of the biggest players in the
market brushed aside.
World Cup qualification was the priority for England at the
beginning of the 2005-06 season, and the BBC had re-established themselves
in the driving seat for providing live coverage of the closing stages of the
campaign, thanks to their exclusivity of all home games, plus the game in
Northern Ireland which was still under a BBC contract, though Sky Sports did
manage to show the game in Wales exclusively, without any terrestrial
highlights. With the BBC then astutely picking up the live rights to a
prestigious friendly with Argentina in Genève, it meant that their
opening match in the World Cup finals was the eighth consecutive England
match to be shown exclusively live on BBC One, a run that had only
previously been achieved by Sky Sports.
Since Sir Trevor Brooking left the BBC in 2004, the dilemma
of who was to replace him as John Motson's co-commentator for England games
became a topic of interest. Mark Lawrenson was the more experienced behind
the microphone, having partnered Motson for the FA Cup Final on more than
one occasion since 1999, and having voiced an England game at Euro 2000, as
well as the last two European Championship Finals, but he was an ex-Irish international (with a Lancashire
accent!) and this was proving to be a stumbling block in the upper echelons
of the BBC when it came to England games.
In the 2004-05 season, Lawrenson had alternated with
36-year-old Graeme Le Saux, who was in his last season with Southampton in
the FA Barclays Premiership before retirement. The former England
international, eleven years younger than Lawrenson, was extremely articulate
and impressed enough to have seemingly secured his position for the World
Cup finals when he appeared alongside Motson for all of the BBC's England
games in the following season up until March 2006. This was when the BBC's
new Director of Sport, Roger Mosey turned up at Stamford Bridge unannounced
to listen in on the commentary between Motson and Lawrenson for an FA Cup
sixth-round tie between Chelsea and Newcastle United. His response was to
insist on using Lawrenson for England's World Cup matches. This was due to
the more light-hearted, though often sardonic and sarcastic views, being a
better compliment/antidote to the sixty-year-old Motson's almost childlike
enthusiasm for statistics, whilst the more serious and studious Le Saux, who
though obviously intelligent, was not coming across to viewers as insightful
or entertaining alongside Motson's monotony. It could be argued that Sir
Trevor Brooking was similarly bland and spent 16 years alongside Motson in
the commentary box. Perhaps it was just time for a change of approach,
though it was, ultimately, not a match made in heaven, Lawrenson declaring,
years later, that it was like working with Rain Man, the autistic savant
character played by Dustin Hoffman in the 1988 movie of the same name. Nevertheless, Le Saux
was not impressed by the decision, believing that he had already been
promised the role. He quit the BBC after rejecting their offer to still use
him as a co-commentator for other matches at the World Cup, not involving
England.
2006 was the year that television began to embrace
high-definition (HD) pictures which were to dramatically increase the
resolution and quality of broadcasts. Suddenly, it was possible to see
crystal-clear detail in backgrounds, and football was an obvious stage to
exploit the new technology. Sky Sports HD was launched in May, though they
still couldn't show any World Cup matches. Both the BBC and ITV utilised a
trial HD service that was only available to 450 businesses and homes via
aerial in the London area, whilst users of a Telewest TVDrive could also
view the World Cup games via cable in HD. Those that did not have access to
HD could at least see their first major tournament in 16:9 widescreen, as
long as they had a digital service.

England
v. Trinidad and Tobago, World Cup 2006:
"Here's Beckham, one great cross
from the England skipper, one big leap for Peter Crouch!"
Clive Tyldesley (ITV)
Crouch was aided somewhat by a sneaky tug of
the dreadlocks of League 1 Gillingham defender, Brent Sancho, preventing him
from jumping with Crouch to meet the cross!
The BBC coverage was again fronted by Gary Lineker, with
former BBC Grandstand and Sportsnight presenter, Steve Rider, who left ITV
in 1985, returning to succeed another former BBC presenter, Des Lynam to
host ITV's World Cup coverage. Clive Tyldesley was accompanied in the
commentary box for two England games by future manager, Gareth Southgate,
who then had to return home, where he succeeded Steve McLaren, about to
become the new England head coach, as manager of Middlesbrough. ITV were
still searching for a permanent successor as first-choice co-commentator to
the disgraced Ron Atkinson, who curiously popped up on UK TV G2, a channel
that the BBC had sub-licensed its live World Cup matches to so that they
could be simulcasted. Tyldesley went on to commentate on his second World
Cup Final, with John Motson on a record sixth for the BBC. Viewing figures
were not quite as high as for Euro 2004, 18 million being the highest for
ITV's coverage of the Sweden game.

England
v. Sweden, World Cup 2006:
"Joe Cole, why not? Swinging shot,
brilliant! Oh! Why not! Absolutely fantastic goal..."
Clive Tyldesley (ITV)
England entered the World Cup with high hopes, but apart from
45 minutes against Sweden, never really threatened to suggest that they
might win the tournament, and with a second-successive quarter-final exit to
Portugal on penalties, with Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo scoring
the deciding kick, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard each missing theirs, and Wayne Rooney getting a red card, the exit could not
have been more soul-wrenching. The BBC captured the mood perfectly by ending
the programme with a montage of England players in slow-motion during the
tournament, beginning with David Beckham saying, "I believe we can go all
the way, I actually, truly, do believe that", and Sven-Göran Eriksson
echoing the sentiment with, "We want to win the World Cup, and we have a
good chance to do it". Quotes from other players, including Gary Neville and
Rooney were also heard, and the accompanying music was 'Numb' by Pet Shop
Boys, with lyrics such as:
Just wanna hide away, make my escape, I want the world to leave
me alone...
I wanna be numb, I don't wanna feel this pain no more, wanna
lose touch, I just wanna go and lock the door...
In the new season, the BBC still had exclusive rights to live
coverage of all of England's home games, with Sky Sports showing highlights,
and the satellite company acquiring the rights to all of England's away
games, presumably as a joint-agreement with all six of their group rivals in
the European Championship qualifying campaign. Unlike the previous
campaign's World Cup qualifiers, the BBC had highlights of each of these
games. It was also an arrangement that ran to the end of the broadcasting
contract at the end of the 2007-08 season, and applied to all but two friendly internationals
(where the arrangement for home games was followed), as
well, a period that included England's move to the newly-built national
stadium at Wembley.
At 61, John Motson was realising that the ever-increasing
overseas trips and longer major tournaments were becoming more of a strain
and it was agreed that he would only cover England's home games for the next
two seasons. This opened up opportunities to his would-be successors as
number-one choice in the future, another important decision for the BBC to
make. So, up-stepped Jonathan Pearce, Steve Wilson and Guy Mowbray, all of
whom had previously commentated on England games, to throw their hat into
the ring and perform alongside Mark Lawrenson, or at the end of each season,
Mark Bright. Mowbray, at 35, was the youngest of the three and, unlike the
other two, was not given any live friendlies to commentate on, but he did
become the BBC's choice to commentate on their occasional coverage of the
England women's team, including their European Championship Final in 2009.
On Sky Sports, Trevor Francis had become Martin Tyler's
regular co-commentator in the 2005-06 season, with Scotsman, Andy Gray
concentrating on Sky's club football coverage, including Premier League,
Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup commitments, most of them alongside
Tyler. Because of the latest contract, they had been unable to show a live
England home game since 2004. Former England under-21 coach, David Platt
took on the role for the next two seasons.
The arrangement between the BBC and Sky Sports seemed to suit
both parties, with six live games each out of the twelve European
Championship qualifiers, and the BBC getting the important final deciding
fixture at Wembley, but their cosy domination was about to come to an
abrupt end. Setanta Sports, based in Dublin, was the latest 'new kid on the block'
and had been building up a portfolio that included the Bank of Scotland
Premier League and the club television channels of Celtic and Rangers. When
the European Commission decreed that Sky had to relinquish part of its
exclusivity of live games in the Premier League that it had had since the
league's formation in 1992, Setanta was able to bid for individual packages,
winning 46 live games per season on Monday nights and early Saturday
evenings at a cost of £392 million, with BSkyB forking out £1.3 billion, an
increase of £290 million from their previous contract for an additional 26
live games.
A year later, before Setanta had shown a single Premier League match, it was
announced that they had also acquired exclusive rights, as part of a £425
million deal, to all of England's competitive away matches and home
friendlies from the 2008-09 season, plus an FA Cup deal that saw them
acquire the first picks for live coverage in each round. ITV joined them in
being able to show all of England's competitive home games live, and in the
FA Cup, two live games, plus a replay in each round up to a second-choice
semi-final, with both companies showing the final live. For ITV, it was one
less game per round than the BBC had had in the previous contract, and, as
in their last coverage of the competition, up to 2001, they would not be
showing the ties of the round.
This came as a double hammer-blow to both the BBC and Sky Sports. The BBC
had been showing some form of FA Cup coverage in every season since 1953,
even being afforded highlights when ITV had the live rights. This also meant
that they had no significant live coverage at all in the 2008-09 season (in
England), just Premier League highlights on Match of the Day which they had
maintained, with ITV no longer interested in competing against them. Sky
Sports and BSB had been broadcasting the FA Cup since 1990.
All of this meant that the 2007-08 season was to signal the end of an era in
broadcasting. John Motson decided that he would continue on the
less-strenuous highlights of Match of the Day, but also on Radio Five Live.
His last England commentary was to be a Wembley friendly against the United
States. None of the British Isles nations qualified for Euro 2008, but
Motson and Lawrenson were still there to commentate on the biggest games,
including the final, Motson's eighth in succession, and Lawrenson's third.
ITV only showed highlights of the final, with Peter Drury and Jim Beglin
commentating.
Motson's retirement from live commentaries brought to an end an incredibly
long career at the top of the football broadcasting world. In 31 years, he
had commentated at a remarkable 157 England internationals, of which 78 had
been broadcast live by the BBC. He had also voiced 29 FA Cup Finals (plus
five Cup Final Replays), with all but four of the finals (when ITV had the
live rights) being live. Add to this the six World Cup Finals and 47
consecutive seasons on Match of the Day (he finally bowed out in 2018), and
it is clear that his dedication to his profession was unrivalled.
Though Motson was winding down a little at 63, influenced undoubtedly by the
BBC losing the England (and FA Cup) contracts, his equivalent at Sky Sports,
Martin Tyler, who was two months younger, and also denied opportunities to
commentate on the FA Cup and England, had no such intentions to wind down.
Sky still had live games in the UEFA Champions League, the Barclays Premier
League, the Coca-Cola Football League and the Carling Cup. It was also, by
no means, the end of Tyler's commentaries on England games. He would return
and was still voicing internationals into his seventies, augmenting his UK
appearances with worldwide commentaries for the Football Association and
other broadcasters, as well as Sky Sports. In fact, he may well have
increased the sheer number of his commentaries per season over the next decade.
The new season saw the baton passed on to Setanta Sports and itv. Jon
Champion (right) had
previously commentated on
England highlights for both the BBC and ITV, but
having slipped behind Clive Tyldesley and Peter Drury in the pecking order
at ITV, he seized the opportunity of becoming Setanta's top commentator when
they began their Barclays Premier League coverage in 2007. A year later, he acquired
a higher profile to be heard at every England match and the top FA Cup-ties,
including the final, alongside Chris Waddle. He remained on ITV's books, as
well, this being the age when most commentators were becoming freelance, and
taking advantage of other channels showing more games from abroad.
Champion was at the mic for England's amazing 4-1 victory in Croatia, a just
revenge for the previous year's Wembley disaster, but the lack of highlights
being scheduled on any terrestrial channel was suddenly thrust into the
media spotlight. Though viewers had become accustomed to paying a monthly
subscription to Sky for its Sports channels, there was a certain resentment
to having to fork out another £9.99 to get the rest of the Barclays Premier League
games shown live on Setanta, and now, England's matches. The European
Commission's intervention to break the Sky monopoly was probably done with
the intention of a free-to-air channel picking up some of the coverage, but
another pay-channel merely added to the financial woes of the average
football viewer.
Setanta insisted that they were happy to licence highlights to be shown on
terrestrial television, but declared that nobody was prepared to offer
enough to broadcast them. The BBC had reportedly offered a quarter of a
million pounds. Come the day of the game, just two hours before kick-off,
Setanta relented and added an unscheduled and unencrypted highlights
programme to be shown after the game. ITV, who already had the live rights
to all of England's competitive home games, and were believed to have had a
half-a-million-pounds offer rejected, were then able to show their own
highlights, 24 hours later, with Clive Tyldesley commentating alone. Whether
he was flown out there on the off-chance that a deal would be made, or more
likely, commentated from a studio in the UK, was not revealed. Tyldesley was
one of the more skilful in the art of off-tube commentaries, a great way of
keeping the costs down since Eurosport pioneered the practice on an
industrial scale in the late-1980s, when they were faced with the dilemma of
voicing match footage from all over the world (not just Europe).
The rest of the season was played out with itv1 relaying highlights
of the away qualifiers, but the
likes of live games in Belarus and Kazakhstan were not enough to entice new
subscribers to Setanta in large-enough numbers, whilst itv1 had live
coverage of prestigious friendlies in Germany and Spain. None of these games
(or even the one against Brazil in 2009) were enticing enough for Scottish
viewers, however, as stv was establishing its separate identity within the
ITV network, and wanted to focus more on programmes made north of the
border. Though they mostly replaced the football with movies, stv opted out of every England international, both live and
highlights, shown on itv1 right up until the 2010 World Cup finals, when
their viewers were briefly given the opportunity to see the sassenachs in
action, again.
By June it had become clear that Setanta, like ITV Digital in
2002, had over-reached and they were unable to continue their payments to
the Football Association and the Premier League. The partly-Disney-owned
ESPN (originally named the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network)
stepped in to pay for the Barclays Premier League games that Setanta had
been scheduled to cover for the next four seasons, and promptly recruited
Setanta's Jon Champion, Chris Waddle and ex-Scottish international, Craig
Burley as commentators.
This worked out well for ITV. Not only were they left with
exclusive live coverage of every FA Cup-tie from the sixth round onwards,
but they also had the option of exclusive live coverage of all of England's
matches outside of the major tournaments, and this was to be the beginning
of a long relationship. David Pleat, who had co-commentated on Maradona's
'Hand of God' goal back in 1986 for ITV, was alongside Clive Tyldesley (and
occasionally, Peter Drury) for each England match of the season shared with
Setanta, once the highlights deal was agreed, but at 64, he was replaced by
46-year-old Andy Townsend for the 2009-10 season. Just like Jim Beglin, who
had also voiced England games for ITV, and Mark Lawrenson for the BBC,
Townsend was an ex-Irish international.
Of the remaining World Cup qualifiers, Setanta would have
only had one more away game, in Ukraine, but with qualification already
secured, ITV chose not to take up that option. The Ukrainian Association of
Football decided instead to sell the rights to an internet company for
live-streaming, with David Pleat popping-up for a farewell appearance at an
England international, alongside Tony Jones (51), an experienced commentator
who had more recently been covering England youth internationals for Sky
Sports. There was some outrage, just as in 2000 when the pay-per-view game
in Finland was played, and then, just a year earlier, when there was no
immediate deal to show terrestrial highlights for the qualifier in Croatia,
but the BBC did, at least, on this occasion, secure highlights on the night,
something that they would not be able to provide again, during the season,
but they were not allowed to announce the change to the scheduling to
include the Match of the Day highlights until the match had been completed.
Though they were excluded from England matches, the BBC had
restored live matches to their roster by snatching Coca-Cola Football League
highlights from ITV in a deal that included ten live matches in each of the
next three seasons. These would be the first Football League games screened
by the BBC since 1988, and they also acquired rights to the Carling Cup,
with live coverage of the final (along with Sky Sports), plus two of the
semi-final legs live.
Sky Sports had also lost England's under-21 internationals to
Setanta, and these were not picked up until the FA live-streamed a game with
Portugal at Wembley, before ESPN covered the last game of the season. The
under-16s' Victory Shield was sponsored by Sky Sports and they continued to
show all six games every season live, whilst British Eurosport continued its
coverage of UEFA and FIFA youth tournaments, though its full internationals
were diminishing as Setanta, ESPN and Sky Sports had all seen the value of
broadcasting live World Cup qualifiers from Europe and South America.
Eurosport showed the odd Asian qualifier and no longer had the extensive
European highlights that they had pioneered and enjoyed throughout the
1990s.
Though Northern Ireland's home qualifiers had been added to
those of Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland on Sky Sports channels,
the BBC's national regions were able to broadcast live coverage of a number
of away qualifiers, as both companies still had plenty of internationals to
show.
The 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa saw the BBC, once
again, share coverage with ITV, who had poached their new presenter, Adrian
Chiles from the BBC's Match of the Day 2 Sunday highlights programme,
following in the footsteps of Des Lynam, Bob Wilson, and several other
celebrities to make the leap to a more lucrative pay-day on the commercial
channel. There was speculation as to who would replace John Motson as the
prestiguous number-one commentator for the BBC, but it probably became clear
when Guy Mowbray was at the microphone for the Carling Cup Final, the BBC's
first League Cup Final since 1987. Both companies made full use of the HD technology, with
each having their own permanent HD channel, as did stv, the only difference
being that BBC HD was only broadcast when any of their channels showed a
programme with an HD version. itv1 hd (and stv hd) were simulcasts and also
showed programmes in standard definition. Unfortunately, the tournament did
not live up to the technology, at least from England's point of view.
itv1 broadcast England's opener against the United States,
and within four minutes, the technology failed them, though speculation
suggested mischievous sabotage or human error. Seconds before Steven Gerrard
gave England the lead, itv1 hd (and stv hd) switched to the sponsors,
Hyundai's car advert, voiced by commentator, Peter Brackley, who was,
ironically, commentating on the match for non-UK viewers, so the goal was
missed. Suspicions were aroused when it was remembered that exactly the same
thing occurred on itv1 just as Everton were about to score the only goal of
an FA Cup-tie against Liverpool, 16 months earlier, with just two and a half
minutes left at the end of extra-time. With the likely delay between the
goal going in and its live broadcast, it would appear that someone pressed
the wrong button as the goal went in, though any investigation was kept
internal to Technicolor, the company responsible for transmission. ITV could
only apologise. The issue did not affect the standard-definition channels,
but things went from bad to worse for both England and ITV.
WORLD CUP
England 1 United States 1
(ITV commentary transcript - Clive Tyldesley)
As
Steven Gerrard gave England the lead in the fourth minute...
Lampard, rolled it to Rooney, just beyond
him, but it'll come for Heskey, and here's Steven Gerrard, and England
take the lead! Lift-off inside of four minutes, a captain's goal from
Steven Gerrard! Leading from the front, it's the perfect start!*
ANDY TOWNSEND: What a great start from
England, it's a terrific goal from Steven Gerrard, and again, the ball
dropped into Heskey, and it's just about picking your right moment to
actually make your run off him, and Gerrard, watch, he does it
absolutely perfectly. It has been a good start from England, a positive
one. Lampard just overruns that, but Gerrard's already got a yard. Once
he's there, you know he's gonna finish it, you know he's got a cool
head, the presence of mind to slot that beautifully with the outside of
his boot.
Oh, this might be fun!
* Words in blue were only heard by viewers watching in standard-definition,
on itv1 and stv i.e. not itv1 hd or stv hd.
As
Dempsey equalised, five minutes before half-time...
Dempsey, one of the stars of the
Confederations Cup, testing Green again.
ANDY TOWNSEND: Oh!
Oh, what an error! What an awful moment
for Rob Green and for England, presented Clint Dempsey with an American
equaliser! Oh, that will take some getting over! Robert Green, fatal
slip, and suddenly, the USA are on terms.
ANDY TOWNSEND: Incredible, as if all
the games that he's played, you know, he's just looked solid, he's just
looked solid. That sorta stuff has been no problem to him. He's just
dropped his concentration for a split-second and it's in the back of the
net.
Six days later, ITV showed England's
dismal goalless draw with Algeria, one of their worst-ever World Cup
performances (though there would be another contender, nine days after
this). As the players were walking off to a chorus of boos, Wayne Rooney
went up to a cameraman who had ventured onto the pitch at the end of the
game, and speaking into the camera, said, sarcastically, "Nice to see your
home fans booing 'ya, that's what are called 'supporters'." A
single-goal victory over Slovenia, screened by the BBC followed, but England's miserable
tourney came to an end in the last 16 (see transcripts at the bottom of the
page).
ITV had also had to dismiss one of
their pundits, Robbie Earle, for selling on a number of his ticket
allocations intended for family and friends, to a marketing company, who
dressed 36 women in orange to advertise a beer that was not one of FIFA's
official sponsors, as they appeared prominently on screen for one of the
group matches.
There was also one more disruption
for ITV as the
tournament came to an end. Although Andy Townsend was their regular
co-commentator for England matches, it was his fellow ex-Irish
international, Jim Beglin, who had been scheduled to accompany Clive
Tyldesley for the first semi-final and final, but an inner-ear infection
making him physically sick caused him to withdraw at short notice. This left
Tyldesley to commentate alone for the semi-final, an extremely rare
situation for a big occasion, but not a problem for the experienced
Tyldesley, who justified his own top billing with a fine performance
describing five goals in the meeting between the Netherlands and Uruguay.
Andy Townsend had since returned home, but Craig
Burley stepped in to co-commentate on both the third-place play-off (which
he was already scheduled for) and the final on consecutive nights. Each of
Tyldesley's three World Cup Finals had been with a different co-commentator
(Ron Atkinson and David Pleat were the others), and the next two would also
be different.
So, although England had, once again, disappointed
in a major tournament, the relentless juggernaut of football broadcasting
rolled on. It was now possible to watch games all-day and every day,
all-year round. There were more new technologies on the horizon, as well,
with the 2010 World Cup finals the first to be filmed partly with
three-dimensional cameras, and FIFA's official film of the tournament was in
3D. Fortunately, none of England's matches appeared in it. In total, 25
games were available to watch live via ESPN in the United States, but not in
the UK, where Sky 3D had only just been trialled in pubs.

England's match was the second of four consecutive live
matches on Sky Sports 1, beginning with the Coca-Cola League 1 clash between
Bristol City and Colchester United and ending with World Cup qualifiers in
the evening between Scotland and Italy, and (from England's group) Poland
and Austria. BBC One Scotland had highlights of their game in Sportscene. At the same time as England's game, BBC One Northern Ireland
was showing their qualifier with Azerbaijan live (also in England's group)
in Match of the Day from Northern Ireland. Sky Sports News would likely have
shown goals from the afternoon's League 1 and 2 games in the Coca-Cola
Football League in the evening. Other World Cup qualifiers broadcast live
were Uzbekistan against Bahrain (in the afternoon on British Eurosport 2),
and the games between Switzerland and Israel, and France and the Faroe
Islands on Setanta Sports 1 which also showed highlights from a previous
meeting between Ireland and France (possibly the 1981 qualifier). British
Eurosport, meanwhile, showed Slovakia's friendly with World Cup hosts,
Germany live. Early-morning Channel 4 viewers could see highlights from the
previous weekend's French Ligue 1 Orange fixture between Auxerre and
Olympique Lyonnais at 7am. Bravo was now the home of Gazzetta Football

There were lots of other live games to watch. Sky Sports 1
and HD1 showed Nottingham Forest's League 1 clash with Scunthorpe United,
followed by Wales' European Championship qualifier with Slovakia (repeated
later on S4C with a Welsh-language commentator), and Scotland against

with action from the later game in the group, between Italy and Ukraine.
Northern Ireland's qualifier in Denmark was live on BBC three (as Match of

three home nations (all except Wales), but included highlights from the
Republic of Ireland's qualifier in Cyprus, whereas Sky Sports' two-hour
highlights programme included all four home nations' games, but possibly not
the Republic's! Action from the Coca-Cola Football League 1 and 2 games

qualifier between Kazakhstan and Poland, and British Eurosport showed three
live games, beginning with Australia against Paraguay in the morning, with
an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea in

9:00am with Gazzetta Football Italia, whilst Sky one had an evening

by live coverage of Greece against South Korea in 2010 World Cup South
Africa on itv1, stv and itv1 hd. Both games also appeared in the later
highlights programmes. itv4 began the day with repeats of the
previous evening's opening ceremony and opening match, between Mexico and
the hosts which had been shown live on itv1, stv and itv1 hd. Highlights of
the game, plus those of France against Uruguay in the same group and shown
live on BBC one and BBC HD, were also shown later in the morning. Football's Greatest appeared

WORLD CUP QUARTER-FINAL
England 0 Portugal 0
AFTER EXTRA TIME
Portugal won 3-1 on penalties
(BBC commentary transcript - John Motson)
As
Wayne Rooney was sent off in the 62nd minute...
Look at Rooney, there, battling away. Wow, it was right under the nose
of the referee, and there's a bit of angst going on here...
MARK LAWRENSON: Ronal...
Portuguese players are pushing Rooney, and he's in trouble.
MARK LAWRENSON: ...and Ronaldo,
straight away, was chirping at the referee to do something.
I think it's Ricardo Carvalho, who's
down.
MARK LAWRENSON: It is.
...and the referee has gone to his
pocket.
MARK LAWRENSON: Oh!
It's red! He's sent Rooney off! It's a
straight red!
MARK LAWRENSON: John, the only thing
you could send him off for is standing on Carvalho.
England will be down to ten men. Shades
of Beckham in 1998. Wayne Rooney gets a red card.
After the action
replay (which,
incidentally, showed that Carvalho pulled Rooney's shirt immediately
before Rooney stepped on him)...
MARK LAWRENSON: Ah, he's stood on him.
Left foot...
MARK LAWRENSON: Stood on him.
Left foot in-between the, er, legs of
Ricardo Carvalho, and England, now, well, where do they go from here,
Mark?
MARK LAWRENSON: Well, we've just talked
about, before about the frustration that Rooney suffers from and it's
all so evident, wasn't it, from that incident? Can't get the ball,
thinks he's been fouled, and he takes retribution on the opposing
player.
(at this point,
there is a close-up of Cristiano Ronaldo winking at someone, a moment
famously highlighted by a media intent on portraying him as the villain
of the piece, but it had no long-term impact on his relationship with
Rooney, his Manchester United team-mate)
Well, there was always a question mark
against his temperament. He passed the fitness test, but he didn't pass
the temperament test.

As
Jamie Carragher, a 118th-minute substitute, stepped up to take England's
fourth penalty in the shootout...
Now, it's tricky for England. Jamie Carragher, who was obviously brought
on with the intention of taking a penalty, because he's walking up now
to try and level it at two-two. If he fails to score, and Portugal get
their next one in, it's all over.
MARK LAWRENSON: No pressure, then?
None, at all. So, Carragher, the third
and last substitute, but erm...
(at this point,
there is a close-up of an England fan in the crowd covering his eyes)
MARK LAWRENSON: Look.
We're paid to look. Otherwise...
MARK LAWRENSON: Ha-ha-ha!
...we'd be turning away. Here comes
Carragher. Oh, no, now the goalkeeper's saying he wasn't ready, the
referee's awarded a retake. Very rarely see that in a shootout.
MARK LAWRENSON: Don't think the referee
blew his whistle, did he?
Carragher was in a hurry. This for
two-two. Oh, Ricardo has kept that out, as well! I don't believe it!
He's saved three, and nearly saved the other one! Now then, Portugal
know, if they score with the next kick, Mark, that's it.
MARK LAWRENSON: Yeah. Ronaldo.
It's Cristiano Ronaldo, what an irony,
who plies his trade in the Premiership. He could put England out of the
World Cup, here. Robinson has to try and keep them in it. He's a
confident boy, isn't he, Mark?
MARK LAWRENSON: Oh, he certainly is.
Tell you what, the goalkeeper's a confident boy, as well, Ricardo, he's
done brilliantly.
What a climax. This for the semi-finals
for Portugal. He's done it! Portugal are through, and England, despite
heroics, are out of the World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo, three-one in the
penalty shootout to Portugal, and Scolari, somehow or other, has put it
across Eriksson and England in a quarter-final for the third time, and
this will be Sven-Göran Eriksson's last game in charge of the
England team.
(he didn't know it at this point, but it
was to be John Motson's 22nd and last live commentary on an England match at a major
tournament, but he still had a European Championship qualifying campaign
to get through...)
Wednesday,
21 November 2007
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING
England 2 Croatia 3
(BBC commentary transcript - John Motson)
As
Kranjčar gave Croatia the lead in the 8th minute...
It's come across to Kranjčar,
Eduardo in the centre. Kranjčar will shoot from here. Oh, it's gone
right through! It's deceived Scott Carson, and England are a goal down,
after only seven and a half minutes! The very thing they didn't want to
happen, and particularly to the young goalkeeper! What on earth went on,
was that the pitch, I wonder? Nico Kranjčar, and the..., there didn't
seem to be any danger here, at first, when the ball went out to him. He
comes slightly inside Micah Richards, and it's gone I..., in-off the
goalkeeper, almost, Mark Lawrenson.
MARK LAWRENSON: Well, the first rule of
goalkeeping, John, is keep your eye on the ball, but also, get your body
in-front of the ball, and then, if you happen to miss it, it hits your
body and comes back out. That is just a pure lack of concentration by
Carson.
As Olić scored
Croatia's second, six minutes later...
...and Eduardo is away here for Croatia. Oh, is he onside? Kovač,
oh, it's gone in, and is
the flag up? The flag is not up and Olić has scored! Olić has
scored for Croatia, it's two-nil! You can't believe this. 13 minutes
gone and everybody looked for the offside, and it's Olić, Ivica
Olić here, picking it up from Eduardo. Is he on? Is he on?
MARK LAWRENSON: No.
No, he's not on, he's level, and he
goes round Carson, and Olić has made it two-nil to Croatia after 13
minutes. Arsenal's Eduardo made the pass, it cuts out the centre-backs.
I think Bridge was playing him onside, certainly somebody was, and Olić
has an easy chance.
MARK LAWRENSON: John, there's no
argument, definitely onside. I think the problem was, from England's
point of view, they thought Eduardo da Silva, when he cut in from the
right on his left, was gonna hit it, and he played a sumptuous little
pass to Olić, who timed his run to perfection.

As England were awarded
a penalty, ten minutes into the second half...
What a responsibility for Frank Lampard. This puts England right back in
it, if he scores, and he did miss one, don't forget, in the World Cup
quarter-final shootout. Everybody, hold your breath. Scores! England
have new hope, Lampard from the penalty-spot, it's two-one!
As Peter Crouch
equalised, ten minutes later...
Here's Beckham, Crouch waiting in the centre. Crouch, surely! Yes! Yes!
Peter Crouch has done it for England, it's two-two, and the big man
keeps up his phenomenal scoring record, but guess who supplied the
cross! David Beckham! Is this the goal that saves England from
humiliation, and possibly sends them to the European Championship
finals? Peter Crouch got it down on his chest, cracked it in, 14 goals
in 24 internationals, thank you, very much, it's level!
MARK LAWRENSON: You can't understate
the quality of a Beckham cross, absolutely brilliant. What a first touch
from Crouch, as well. He just waited for the ball to drop, fantastic
composure in the cauldron of this game.
As Petrić scored
the winner in the 77th minute...
Petrić again, oh, he's scored, extraordinary!
It's the substitute, Petrić with the deadly left foot, and Croatia
have gone three-two up, and England may be out after all! Something out
of nothing from Mladen Petrić, who'd only been on the field five
minutes. Pranjić, the other substitute, makes it. He fires a shot,
it goes across Carson, Mark.
MARK LAWRENSON: Don't...
It's three-two!
MARK LAWRENSON: I don't think Carson sees this until very
late. Comes past Sol Campbell, and it's just hit so early, wasn't
it? Good play by Pranjić, as well, into him. One touch and hit.
As the final whistle blew,
signalling England's exit from the competition...
...and England are out of the
European Championships, unless Andorra score against Russia in the
next three minutes
[they didn't]. England players, standing, lying, in disbelief,
Steve McClaren shepherded away. Croatia celebrate what, for them,
has to be seen as a memorable victory, and Wembley is stunned. There
are sounds of disbelief, there's a bit of booing, there are people
standing, just trying to take in what's happened. England were
two-nil down, they got back to two-two which was a qualification
position, and then they conceded a third goal, and the substitutes
and the injured players come on, as Carson hangs his head, and the
scene is one of desolation at Wembley.
