Media Coverage
England on Television
(1960-65)

The commentators in italics are likely, but not confirmed.

England's television appearances in the first half of the 1960s followed a similar pattern to the preceding years, but there was a gradual shift of emphasis in a number of areas, including the channels, the amount of coverage and the kick-off times.

ITV had only acquired their first exclusive live coverage of an England international in 1959, and they had also been showing the second half of an Under-23 international each season. In the new decade, they were broadcasting, at least, one live full international a season. The BBC continued to use 'Sportsview', the midweek sporting highlights programme presented by Peter Dimmock. Although ITV regions were restricted by their own afternoon schedules (schools programmes) from showing anything but the second half, they had made the last Wembley game of the season their own, with Gerry Loftus now the established commentator and they eventually managed to provide the full exclusive ninety minutes of an international for the first time, against Hungary.

The BBC still had all of the England away games, however, with Kenneth Wolstenholme commentating from far and wide. The 1962 World Cup in Chile was his third, but whilst the previous two tournaments had been shown live on both channels via Eurovision, the BBC had to transmit this tournament's games by satellite and they were not available to be viewed until two days after the game. In fact, England had already beaten Argentina in their second game before viewers in the UK were able to see a recording of their opening-day defeat by Hungary.

Back home, the annual Scotland fixture was still the exclusive preserve of the BBC, in most of the UK, anyway. 'Scotsport' provided a commentator from north of the border (Arthur Montford) for the benefit of Scottish viewers in their ITV region. The BBC's Saturday night programme, 'Sports Special' was eventually replaced by extended weekly coverage of Football League games on 'Match of the Day', which helped to launch the new BBC2 channel in 1964. ITV had been producing regional highlights coverage two years previous to that, after a failed attempt in 1960 to popularise live league games during the season.

The other big shift during this period was the move from midweek afternoon games to floodlit evening fixtures. This brought England internationals into direct competition with other 'prime time' favourites and the compromise was that even the BBC's live coverage became restricted to the second half of games.

All of this was about to change again, however. The BBC and ITV had made huge inroads into their coverage of club football. The authorities had long expressed a concern that TV coverage was affecting attendances at games and, with statistics supporting this view, they decided that live coverage of all England games during the season would stop in 1965. It took another 25 years and the explosion of satellite television for the broadcasters to re-establish the live games that are now taken for granted.                                                              Picture supplied by tv50.org.uk
