Media Coverage
England on Television
(1955-60)

The commentators in italics are likely, but not confirmed.

Left: Kenneth Wolstenholme, who commentated on virtually all of the big games in the 1950s.

The 1955-56 season saw a number of developments resulting in increased coverage of football on television. Firstly, the BBC introduced a regular Saturday night programme called 'Sports Special', which featured brief highlights from a selection of the day's Football League games from around the country, with commentary. The games were recorded on film, then rushed back to London for editing so that they were ready to be broadcast by 10pm.

This same production team was used to enable England's two away games in the British Championship (in Cardiff and Glasgow) to be shown on television on the same day for the very first time. Only one small problem marred the first of these games, against Wales. Because the film reels were shorter than 45 minutes, they had to be changed during play and, as luck would have it, both Welsh goals in their first victory against England for 17 years were missed.

As the BBC made better use of editing, they were able to provide highlights of every England game, in addition to the live coverage of midweek internationals. For games played abroad, it was the following night before the highlights could be broadcast, but viewers were able to see all but one England match of the 1955-56 season, with the added bonus of live coverage from a glorious 3-1 victory against the world champions, in Berlin, thanks to the Eurovision network. The only game not broadcast that season was the one in Helsinki, for the simple reason that television had not yet been introduced to Finland.

The other development in that historic season was that the BBC now had a competitor, the Independent Television Authority (ITA), which saw football as a means of attracting viewers. Their first game, broadcast by Rediffusion to the London area, was the 1955 Wembley international against Spain, which was also shown simultaneously by the BBC. Rediffusion's commentator was Kent Walton, who became more famous as the wrestling commentator on 'World of Sport' in the 1970s. It is believed that there were plans for both channels to show the game prior to this (against Northern Ireland), but it is not known if this was actually broadcast by the ITA.

1956-57 saw every single England match televised in some form for the first time and lots more besides, including Amateur, Under-23, Youth, Schoolboy and B internationals. In fact, both television channels now seemed to use internationals at all levels as a means of bombarding the airwaves with live football, due to the lack of authority to show anything more than five minutes of Football League action. Because they did not have the extent of outside broadcast facilities available to the BBC, Independent Television (ITV) only managed to gain exclusive coverage of a single Youth international played at Chelsea in 1958. Their time would come.

England's final World Cup qualifier, in Dublin, in 1957, provided a rare opportunity in the commentary box for an up-and-coming 31-year-old reporter called David Coleman. Kenneth Wolstenholme was occupied with live coverage of Scotland's game in Switzerland, leaving the man who would eventually succeed him as the BBC's big-match commentator, to voice the highlights as England dramatically secured their place in Sweden with a last-minute equaliser.

Film reports of England's eastern European tour games in Belgrade and Moscow at the end of the 1957-58 season found their way onto BBC screens via the 'To-night' and 'Sportsview' programmes, but the World Cup in Sweden was made available to both channels via the same Eurovision network that was used four years earlier in Switzerland. As there was again only one game available to be broadcast at any one time, England were only featured twice out of their four fixtures. During their opening game with the Soviet Union, viewers were watching West Germany's first defence of the title, against Argentina in Malmö; and whilst England were battling for survival against Austria in Borĺs, the featured game was again in Malmö, where Northern Ireland bravely held the West Germans to earn themselves another crack at a quarter-final place. The 'To-night' programme brought viewers up to date with film reports by David Coleman on the day after England's games.

In the following season, ITV managed to show their first Under-23 game, live from Norwich. One other minor breakthrough in 1958 came when the BBC were able to show highlights from Belfast on the same day. Previously, games played on the emerald isle were not shown until the following day. England's games on the 1959 tour of the Americas were also covered, but each took two or three days to appear on BBC screens.

At the end of the decade, ITV finally made the breakthrough into full England internationals, with exclusive live coverage of the two autumn games at Wembley. Surprisingly, only two regions broadcast the first of them live, with the others having to show delayed coverage following a scheduled schools programme. The BBC, meanwhile, after two end-of-season tours in which they were unable to show action on the day of the game, made their own breakthrough by showing live coverage of the second half of England's meetings with Spain in Madrid, and Hungary in Budapest via Eurovision. Though they lost both matches, and it was only second-half coverage for both, it was the first time that live pictures of non-competitive England games had been beamed from abroad in four years.

Thanks to Robert Pedley for spotting the coverage of the 1959 tour.
