Born 14 March 1912 at 12 Bonnington Grove, Heavitree, Exeter, Devonshire [registered in Exeter, June 1912]. To Sidney Harry and Eliza Maud (née Butt). One older sister, Lilian. Attended Ladysmith Road School, Exeter.
census notes According to the 1939 register, Clifford, a professional footballer, is married to Joan, and they are living at 73 Broadfields Avenue in Enfield, with his mother-in-law, Lillian Shaul. 
Married: to Joan Lillian Shaul (b.17 January 1916), at St. Mary's Church on 24 June 1939 (left) [registered in Hendon, June 1939]. They had two daughters, Patricia and Barbara.

Spotted playing for Exeter City by the legendary Herbert Chapman, Bastin signed for Arsenal in 1929 and became a classic footballing forward of the 1930s, winning cup and championship medals as a matter of routine. 229 wartime appearances and 21 appearances for England preceded his 1947 retirement. - A Football Compendium, Peter J. Club Career

Club(s) Played schoolboy football within Exeter, and represented Devon County boys, and also helped with the two local junior sides, St. Mark's FC and St. James' FC, during which, he joined Exeter City FC as an amateur in 1926. Signing professional forms on 31 October 1928. He scored six goals in seventeen league matches, then, after Exeter City FC quashed rumours on 22 May, Bastin joined Arsenal FC on 3 June 1929 for a £2000 transfer fee. In September 1938, he was given a month's leave to regain his passion for the game after he 'lost his enthusiasm', despite this, he played in 395 Division One matches, and scored 150 goals, a record for Arsenal held until 1998. He played his last game for the Gunners in a Manchester United FC defeat on 28 September 1946. He was linked with becoming a player-coach at Ilfracombe FC.
