Match Report
by the Western Daily Press, Monday, 24 May 1948 |
England's soccer team wound up their short
Continental tour at Schaffhausen yesterday by beating the Canton of
Schaffhausen, a Swiss second division side, by six goals to nil.
Scorers were Mortensen (3), Mannion, Pearson and Cockburn.
Arranged primarily as an exhibition match the game did not fully live
up to that description owing to the conditions. Apart from the
sweltering heat, the ground, a school playing area, was small, dry,
bumpy and sloping.
Star of the England team was centre-forward
Mortensen, who netted three goals. Other scorers were Mannion, Pearson
and Cockburn.

Match Report
as reported in the F.A. Yearbook
1948-49, pages 28 & 29 |
One of the purposes of the
exhibition match played at Schaffhausen four days later was to
encourage the local townspeople to vote the money for a new stadium.
The need for this was only too apparent, as the match was played on a
school ground which left much to be desired. In spite of this and hard
play by a representative Swiss team, the English side won without
difficulty—this time by six goals to nil.
