Manchester City, obviously, intended their stay in the second division, following the previous season's relegation, to be a short one, and they were unbeaten in their first ten games, but they somehow squandered a three-goal half-time lead at Doncaster, and Blackburn took the opportunity to rise to the summit.

Gateshead notched up an incredible 18th successive league victory at fortress Redheugh Park, after missing out on promotion by two points in the previous season. Their very next home game, two weeks later, however, saw their visitors, Rotherham become the first to pick up any points at Gateshead in the whole of 1950, with a 3-0 win, and it was the Millers who went on to win the title.
