A rare home defeat for Wednesday, but five goals at Bury, a week later, took them back to the top flight. Bristol Rovers' best ever season saw them on the brink of promotion, but defeat at Leeds, also a week later, enabled the Yorkshiremen to snatch the runners-up spot by winning their last six games, and Rovers finished sixth.

Lewin (2), Hardisty, Stewart ~ Citron
England cricketer, Micky Stewart was flown home from the West Indies to play for Corinthian-Casuals in the game, but his flight was delayed and he did not arrive at the ground until three minutes after the kick-off. No substitutes were allowed so he could only watch as the holders came from behind to win the cup for a record ninth time.
