All information is complete to and including England's last match, the fifth of the 2022-23 season, against Wales on 29 November 2022.

Diary

Friday, 1 April 2022 - The draw for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is has been completed. England are drawn in Group B alongside Iran and the United States. One from Wales, Scotland or Ukraine will also join them.

Thursday, 23 June 2022 - FIFA has approved 26-man squads for this year's World Cup in Qatar. The move is in line with national competitions and is an expansion on the 23-man squads that had been used before the coronavirus pandemic. FIFA also said that up to 15 substitutes can be named for each game, meaning no player misses out. Something Gareth Southgate had been calling for. FIFA also said that no more than 26 people can sit on the team bench—fifteen substitutes and eleven officials, one of which must be a doctor.

Thursday, 10 November 2022 - Leicester midfielder James Maddison has been included in England's 26-man squad for the Fifa World Cup in Qatar. Manager Gareth Southgate has also picked Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker and Arsenal defender Ben White. But AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, Brentford striker Ivan Toney and West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen miss out. Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, despite only recently returning from two months out with a shoulder problem, is in, as is centre-back Harry Maguire, who has struggled to get a game for Manchester United this season.

Monday, 14 November 2022 - With no fresh injury concerns over the final week of league games across Europe, the players begin gathering at St. George's Park for a recovery session.

Tuesday, 15 November 2022 - Following a squad number ceremony, where HRH Prince William presented each England player with their squad number, the England squad leave St. George's Park for Qatar, expecting to arrive at 8.00pm local time, and at their base an hour later. They fly on board a Virgin Atlantic G-VPRD aeroplane, named Rain Bow. The team are based on the shore of the Arabian Gulf at the five-star Souq Al Wakra Hotel.

Wednesday, 16 November 2022 - All 26 players are training for the first time at their training base, Al Wakrah Sports Complex.

Thursday, 17 November 2022 - 25 of the 26 players are training in the hot Al Wakrah sun today. There is no specialist cooling equipment, instead, it is an effort to acclimatise the players to the Qatari weather. James Maddison is the missing player due to 'load management' and has 'a slight knee problem.'

Friday, 18 November 2022 - James Maddison is again the only member of the squad not in full training today, He was present at the session but watched from the sidelines trying to stay hydrated.

Sunday, 20 November 2022 - The squad reschedule training to start at 4.00pm (1.00pm GMT) to match the kick-off time tomorrow. Again, Maddison is the only member of the squad to miss out on the training session.
Gareth Southgate has confirmed that James Maddison and Kyle Walker will miss tomorrow's match. Walker is working his way back to fitness following groin surgery, whereas Maddison is yet to train.

Monday, 21 November 2022 - England other European nations will not wear the OneLove armband at the World Cup in Qatar because of the threat of players being booked. The captains of nine countries, including Harry Kane, had planned to wear the armband to promote diversity and inclusion. A joint statement from seven Football Associations said they could not put their players "in a position where they could face sporting sanctions. We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented," the statement read. The governing bodies said they had written to Fifa in September informing them about the OneLove armband but not received a response. "Fifa has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play. We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play." In response, Fifa has brought forward its own "No Discrimination" campaign, which had been due to start from the quarter-finals. Captains will now be permitted to wear a No Discrimination armband for the duration of the tournament.

6.15pm England 6 Iran 2 -
England's Fifa World Cup campaign opened in thoroughly convincing fashion as they outclassed Iran in an incident-packed match. Gareth Southgate's side strolled to victory, with Iran's hopeless plight made worse by the early loss of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to concussion after a clash of heads with team-mate Majid Hosseini. Jude Bellingham got England off the mark in this World Cup with a soaring header from Luke Shaw's cross 10 minutes before the break and the game was wrapped up before half-time thanks to Bukayo Saka's fine strike and Raheem Sterling's classy volley with the outside of his foot from Harry Kane's cross. Saka got his second before Iran's supporters were given a moment of real delight when Mehdi Taremi scored a fine goal after 65 minutes - but England substitute Marcus Rashford then netted another smooth, composed strike with his first involvement. To put the gloss on an incredibly dominant display, Jack Grealish slotted home from close range after a good run and pull back by Callum Wilson. Iran did pull another back in injury time when Taremi slotted in a penalty after a John Stones foul.

Tuesday, 22 November 2022 - There are thirteen players involved in today's training session, with Callum Wilson joining the eleven who started yesterday's game working inside. James Maddison continues to work on rehabilitation indoors.
Captain Harry Kane is to have a scan on his right ankle tomorrow. He sustained the injury early in the second half of the match against Iran and was eventually replaced with Callum Wilson.

Wednesday, 23 November 2022 - Harry Kane was able to train today, boosting hopes he will be fit for Friday's match. He was due to have a scan today. James Maddison, again missed training, however Harry Maguire was involved. Callum Wilson did not train in a light session with ther rest of the substitutes, but is not considered a doubt.

Thursday, 24 November 2022 - Captain Harry Kane will be fit to face the United States, says his manager Gareth Southgate. The scan revealed no injury and he worked separately from the group as a precaution. Harry Maguire is also feeling much better, after it was revealed that his illness affected his vision. Kyle Walker has stepped us his training and is available for tomorrow. 25 players are training today, with James Maddison again, the player missing out.

Friday, 25 November 2022 - England 0 United States 0 -
England laboured to a drab draw against the United States to miss the chance to seal qualification for the World Cup knockout stage. Gareth Southgate's side were second best for long periods as they failed to match the energy and intensity of the USA, who have their own hopes of making the last 16. England, with Harry Maguire solid in defence, were unimpressive and rode their luck when Weston McKennie missed an easy chance and Christian Pulisic struck the bar in the first half. Mason Mount brought a fine save from USA goalkeeper Matt Turner just before the break but this was an undistinguished display that carried none of the attacking verve that saw the Three Lions thrash Iran in their opening game, and leaves them heading into their match against Wales with their fate undecided. England remain firm favourites to qualify for the knockout stage, knowing they only need to avoid a four-goal defeat against Wales to progress.

Saturday, 26 November 2022 -
Fourteen players, including James Maddison, are out for today's training session in Al Wakrah. The eleven that started yesterday's match are taking part in a recovery session. Jordan Henderson is working indoors on an individual recovery programme.

Monday, 28 November 2022 - The squad members are back training at their Al Wakrah Sports Complex base. Only 25 of the 26 players are involved in the 30-degree heat, with Ben White missing out because of illness.

Tuesday, 29 November 2022 - Marcus Rashford inspired England to the victory required to top Group B and ensure it was despair for Wales as they went out of the tournament after a bitterly disappointing World Cup campaign. Wales needed to either beat England and hope Iran and USA ended in a draw or pursue the more unlikely outcome of running up a four-goal victory margin at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. England, who now face Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday, ensured neither scenario was ever a serious consideration as they dominated throughout and took full control after an uneventful first 45 minutes. Wales manager Rob Page was forced to replace Gareth Bale at half-time because of an injury, although the great talisman had only had seven touches in an anonymous display. And any hope of Wales qualifying for the last 16 was wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart. Rashford fired a free-kick past Danny Ward following Ethan Ampadu's foul on Phil Foden after 50 minutes, with the Manchester City midfielder then marking his return to England's team moments later by turning in Harry Kane's cross at the far post. Wales were demoralised and outclassed as they knew they were on the way home from Qatar and Rashford added his second in the 68th minute, with a large slice of help from Wales keeper Ward, in for suspended Wayne Hennessey after his red card against Iran, who allowed a fierce shot to slip through his legs. England top Group B with seven points, two points ahead of the United States who set up a last-16 meeting with the Netherlands by beating Iran 1-0 in their grudge match, while Wales finished bottom of the table with a point.

Wednesday, 30 November 2022 - Defender Ben White has left the camp to return home for personal reasons. The Arsenal player is not expected to return for the rest of the tournament. "We ask the the player's privacy is respected at this moment in time." An FA statement said.

Thursday, 1 December 2022 - After a day of rest, all the remaining 25-man squad are training at their Al-Wakrah Sports Complex base.

Saturday, 3 December 2022 - The 25-man squad are back training at their Al-Wakrah Sports Complex.

Sunday, 4 December 2022 - Raheem Sterling has left the squad in Qatar and returned to London after his home was burgled. Surrey Police said no-one was home at the time of the burglary last night, in which jewellery and watches were taken, and no threats of violence were involved. The player's spokesperson said Sterling is "prioritising the wellbeing" of his three young children. Gareth Southgate said: "Sometimes football isn't the most important thing and family should come first." According to his spokesperson, Sterling was "shaken" by the news and "as soon as he was alerted he wanted to get home, concerned for the wellbeing of his children". Southgate added: "We want to give him that space and we will see over the next few days how that develops." It had initially been reported that armed intruders broke into his home and the family were home. But in a statement, the police said: "We are currently investigating a report of a burglary at an address in Oxshott, Leatherhead. The occupants of the property came home and discovered a number of items, including jewellery and watches, had been stolen. Enquiries to establish the circumstances are under way and the investigation is ongoing. "No threat of violence was involved as the items were discovered stolen retrospectively."
England 3 Senegal 0 - England will meet France in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday after an impressive demolition of Senegal at Al Bayt Stadium. Gareth Southgate's side survived a nervy opening in which goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an outstanding save from Boulaye Dia to run out convincing winners with a powerful display of attacking strength. Jude Bellingham was England's star man, setting up the first goal for Jordan Henderson with a perfect cross after 38 minutes then having a hand in the second on the stroke of half-time, combining with Phil Foden as captain Harry Kane powered home his first of the tournament. Foden was the creator once more as England wrapped the game up in the 57th minute, crossing for Bukayo Saka to show great awareness and touch to flick a delicate finish past Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Monday, 5 December 2022 - Callum Wilson is the major worry as he is suffering with a 'minor strain', and is rested from training. Of all the other twelve players who did not start the match, are involved.

Wednesday, 7 December 2022 - The squad, 22 of them, are training in today's session at Al Wakrah. Callum Wilson is progressing with his rehabilitation indoors, whereas Declan Rice is missing because he is unwell. In the evening, Robbie Williams treated the England party to a private concert at their hotel. Despite receiving criticism for performing in Qatar with its controversial human nights record, Williams said "Of course, I don't condone any abuses of human rights anywhere. But, that being said, if we're not condoning human rights abuses anywhere, then it would be the shrtest tour the world has ever known; I wouldn't even be able to perform in my own kitchen."

Thursday, 8 December 2022 - Raheem Sterling, on his 28th birthday, has been cleared by the FA and FIFA to return to squad.

Friday, 9 December 2022 - All 25 members of the squad, including Raheem Sterling, are back training in Al Wakrah. "He has missed lots of training and had two long flights," commented Southgate.
