Carsley began his playing career as a defensive-midfielder with
Derby County FC, whom he signed professional forms in 1992.
He remained with County until he joined Brian Kidd's Blackburn Rovers FC
on 23 March 1999 for a £3.375 million transfer fee. But left after
relegation, and then falling
out with the new manager, Graeme Souness, despite becoming club captain.
Coventry City FC signed him on 1 December 2000 in a £2½
million deal, but again, endured relegation. On 8 February 2002, Carsley
returned to the Premier League when Everton FC ended weeks of speculation
and signed him for a £1.9 million transfer fee, where as well as playing,
he worked on his Coaching Badges. He left Goodison Park after turning down
a contract extension on 19 May 2008. He signed with Birmingham City FC as
club captain a day later, effective 1 July, and earned his club a
promotion into the Premier League in his first season, but missed the most
of his second season because of injury. Carsley returned to Coventry City
FC as club captain on 23 July 2010 and remained for a
single season, after which he retired from playing. |

When he retired from playing, Carsley was appointed the under-18
coach at Coventry City FC Academy on 22 July 2011. He was promoted to
coach the Development Squad and assist the first team the following season,
becoming caretaker of the first team between 26 August to 19 September
2012, and again between 14 February and 8 March 2013. Carsley left City on 2 July 2013 to become Sheffield United FC's assistant manager.
He was sacked, alongside his manager, David Weir, on 11 October 2013. He
was appointed as Brentford FC's Development Squad manager on 5 October
2014. He was also handed
an England U19 coaching
position on 7 September 2015 under Aidy Boothroyd, and on 28 September,
promoted to Brentford FC Head Coach, stepping down on 30 November, and
leaving the club on 10 December.
Alongside Steve
Cooper, he also worked with all England youth levels as an 'out-of-possession' coach.
During the same time, he was appointed as Manchester City FC's under-18
manager on 29 August 2016, for the season. Appointed as Birmingham City
FC's Head Professional Development Coach on 23 June 2017, and then appointed as an
England U21 assistant on 29 August, and stepped up to caretaker manager on
16 September, before becoming the club's assistant manager thirteen days
later. Both he and his manager, Steve Cotterill, were sacked in March
2018. On 24
September 2020, he was confirmed as Lead of the Professional Development
Phase, which oversaw the U18s, U19s and U20s, of which he was placed in
sole charge. Then on 27 July 2021, he was placed in charge of the U21
side. |
