England tenure The International Selection Committee, a committee initially made up of seven men had sole responsibility for selecting the England team from 1888 through the last match before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. 
First match No. 32, 4 February 1888, Wales 1 England 5, a retrospective British Championship match at Alexandra Recreation Ground, Nantwich Road in Crewe, Cheshire.
Last match No. 226, 24 May 1939, Romania 0 England 2, friendly match at Stadionul ANEF in Bucharest.
Major tournaments The FA declined to join the World Cup Finals 1930, 1934 and 1938;
