Club(s)
Started his junior football playing school football, starting in goal before settling at centre-back.  As a thirteen year-old, Stuart trained with Queen's Park Rangers FC for six months, but the club declined to give Pearce a future with them. Arsenal FC also courted his services at the same time, but he was happy enough with his schoolboy career. After leaving school, Stuart joined Wealdstone FC in 1978, he played 176 league matches, scoring ten goals before joining Coventry City FC on 20 October 1983 for £25,000, but not before a trial with Hull City AFC in 1980, which he turned down the contract offered (54 league appearances, four goals).  His defensive awareness was picked up by Brian Clough and Pearce, alongside Ian Butterworth, was signed by Nottingham Forest FC on 3 June 1985 for £450,000 (PFA states £200,000 fee). (401 league appearances, 63 goals). After a four month spell as caretaker-manager, Pearce left Forest at the end of the 1996-97 season.  Despite his twelve years, many of them as Forest captain, Stuart made the move to Newcastle United FC on 21 July 1997 on a free transfer for the chance of Champions League football, he would go on to play 37 Premier League matches, before returning to London, but not before a return to Forest was mooted, but that failed to materialise and Pearce joined Harry Redknapp's West Ham United FC on 2 August 1999, and another two goals in 42 league matches followed. Pearce then joined Manchester City FC on 20 June 2001 where he played his final 38 league games in the Championship, scoring three goals. He retired from playing football in May 2002.
