Management Career

Club(s)
Halmstads BK of Sweden, from January 1976 until November 1980. Returned to England in 1980, taking up the position as assistant manager of Bristol City FC before becoming the club manager on 3 January until 30 April 1982. Returned to Sweden in '82 with IK Oddevold, and Örebro SK from January 1983, he remained until November 1984. Went to Malmö FF in January 1985 and after a highly successful period, ending in November 1989. Hodgson travelled to Switzerland to become manager of Neuchâtel Xamax FC in July 1990 of the Nationalliga A.  It was enough to be noted by the ASF/SFV, who employed Hodgson as their manager from 26 January 1992, steering them to the 1994 World Cup Finals and the 1996 European Championship Finals. After the successful European qualification campaign, Hodgson left to join FC Internazionale Milano, on 15 November 1995.  He returned to England and Blackburn Rovers FC in June 1997. When Berti Vogts resigned as the Germany manager, Hodgson was on the DFB wishlist, but for fear of preventing a German coaching famine, he was not offered the position, but lack of immediate Blackburn success and a stuttering start to his second season, Hodgson was sacked on 21 November 1998. In May and June 1999, Hodgson returned as caretaker manager of FC Internazionale Milano. Despite being shortlisted as the new manager of Austria, he returned to Switzerland and Grasshopper Club Zürich in July 1999. After one season, Hodgson signed with Denmark's FC København, in July 2000, a decision that prevented him from taking the England job that eventually went to Sven-Göran Eriksson. His stint in Denmark was a successful one and he returned to Italy on 21 June 2001 with Udinese Calcio SpA, but was sacked six months later on 10 December 2001.  On 9 April 2002, Hodgson took up the post of manager of United Arab Emirates until January 2004. In July 2004, he joined Viking FK of Tippeligaen. On 18 August 2005, Hodgson signed a contract to become manager of the Finland national team from August 2006, a post he actually took from January of that year. The Finnish FA in turn prevented Hodgson from taking over similar roles at Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. However, on 29 December 2007, Hodgson returned to England once more to become manager of Fulham FC. After a successful stint, Hodgson became manager of Liverpool FC on 30 June 2010, but high expectations did not materialise and he was duly sacked on 8 January 2011. Undeterred, Hodgson became manager of his third Premiership club in a row, West Bromwich Albion FC on 11 February 2011, a job he held until May 2012.

England Career

England tenure Having turned down the position in October 2001, following Keegan's resignation. Hodgson signed a four year contract on 1 May 2012, a day after being the only candidate to be interviewed for the vacant position. Resigned 27 June 2016 following the defeat by Iceland in the European Championship Finals.
Other applicants Since the resignation of Fabio Capello, the press were adamant that Harry Redknapp should receive the lucrative managerial position, but the Football Association only interviewed one candidate, Hodgson, although one, possibly two others, were on the shortlist.

Beyond England

Club(s) Following a year out from the game, Hodgson returned to management with Crystal Palace FC on 12 September 2017. He remained in the Premier League, becoming the oldest to manage in the League, and announced his retirement on 18 May 2021, effective the following weekend.
Remarkably, Hodgson stepped back into the limelight when he became Watford FC's new manager on 25 January 2022, until the end of the season, in a bid to save them from relegation from the Premier League.
He was remarkably reappointed as manager of Crystal Palace FC, as a 75 year-old, on 21 March 2023.
