Diary

Thursday, 8 February 2024 - At the headquarters of UEFA at the Maison de la Mutualité, 24 Rue Saint-Victor, Paris, France. Serbia's Aleksandr Kolarov makes the draw of League B of UEFA Nation's League, and he pairs England with Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece.

Tuesday 11am, 16 July 2024 - England manager Gareth Southgate has resigned two days after defeat by Spain in the 2024 European Championship final. Southgate, 53, managed his country for 102 games in eight years in charge. His contract was set to expire later this year. "As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it's time for change, and for a new chapter."
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said the process to appoint Southgate's successor has started and "we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible". He added the FA "have an interim solution in place if it is needed" and will not comment further on the process until a new boss is appointed. Under-21 boss Lee Carsley could be a candidate for an interim solution.

Monday, 5 August 2024 - The Football Association board have given formal approval for the appointment of a foreign manager to replace Gareth Southgate. CEO Mark Bullingham went to his nine fellow board members to gain their backing to approach foreign candidates before beginning the recruitment process. The board are understood to have endorsed Bullingham's request without the need of a vote, although their were some dissenting noises. Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are the leading foreign candidates as they are both available. But their salary demands maybe problematic. The FA's search is being led by Mark Bullingham, and the technical director, John McDermott. However, as England's next squad announcement is before the end of this month, it is likely under-21 manager will be called upon to take interim charge.

Friday, 23 August 2024 - Jude Bellingham has sustained a calf injury in training just over two weeks before England begin their Nations League campaign. The 21-year-old was unable to finish a club session on Friday. Reports in Spain suggest he will be unavailable until late September. In a statement, Real said Bellingham had medical tests on Friday on the problem with his right calf and that his "progress will be monitored". Writing on his social media accounts, Bellingham added: "Nothing I hate more than missing games but trying to see the positive side and maybe my body is telling me it needs a bit more rest after a busy year. I'm very frustrated but I’ll be supporting the lads like a fan until I can re-join them again in my best and strongest form."

Thursday, 29 August 2024, noon - Kieran Trippier announces his retirement from international football. The 33-year-old was capped 54 times with his only goal coming against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat in Moscow. The Newcastle right-back, who made his debut in 2017 under former manager Gareth Southgate, captained England three times.
2.00pm
- Lee Carsley has handed call-ups to Angel Gomes, Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White and Noni Madueke in his first squad since being named England interim manager. Lille winger Gomes, Newcastle defender Livramento, Nottingham Forest midfielder Gibbs-White and Chelsea winger Madueke all played for Carsley during his time as England U21 manager. Manchester City playmaker Jack Grealish, who was cut from England's preliminary Euro 2024 squad, has been recalled as well as Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who were in the Euros squad, have both been left out. Manchester United defender Luke Shaw and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham both miss out through injury. Ten of the 26-man squad all played for Carsley when he was the under-21 manager.

Sunday, 1 September 2024 - Phil Foden is unlikely to join up with the England squad because of illness, says Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. The 24-year-old has only played 45 minutes this season, as a substitute for City against Chelsea two weeks ago. "I don't think so right now," said Guardiola. "I think he will not go but I don't know. He doesn't feel well. But national teams, they decide."

Tuesday, 3 September 2024 - As the party arrive at St. George's Park, it is announced that Manchester City's Phil Foden, Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Villa's Ollie Watkins have all withdrawn from the squad.

Wednesday, 4 September 2024 - All 23 players are out at training this morning. Under-21s goalkeeper James Beadle is also taking part in the session.

Friday, 6 September 2024 - Again, all 23 players are involved in the training session, before the party leave Birmingham International Airport at 4:49pm, on board a British Airways Embraer E190SR (CFE7031 G-LCAH), landing at Dublin Airport forty minutes later, at 5:29pm.

Saturday, 7 September 2024 - Republic of Ireland 0 England 2 - Lee Carsley started his reign as England's interim manager with a win against the Republic of Ireland, with Declan Rice and Jack Grealish both scoring against the country they used to represent. Carsley had a largely untroubled start as his team overcame a lively atmosphere at a sold-out stadium in Dublin. Rice, who played three senior friendlies for the Republic of Ireland before switching allegiance in 2019, silenced the jeers from the home fans after firing home in the 11th minute when Harry Kane's shot was blocked. Rice chose not to celebrate, while Grealish, who represented Ireland at youth level, put his fingers in his ears after scoring on his return to the England side following his omission from Southgate's Euro 2024 squad. His goal followed a slick move in the 26th minute, with Rice providing the assist. The Republic of Ireland had started well in Heimir Hallgrimsson's first game as boss. They were presented with a golden chance to open the scoring in the third minute but Jayson Molumby, who was unmarked, headed over from close range. And Sammie Szmodics forced a save from Jordan Pickford before England moved through the gears to take command. This England team looked refreshed and re-energised from the side that trooped wearily off the pitch in Berlin after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain 55 days ago.

Sunday, 8 September 2024 - The England party return to training and are based at Tottenham Hotspur FC training facilities in Enfield. During a break in training, assistant Ashley Cole presents Morgan Gibbs-White and Angel Gomes with their Legacy Caps.

Monday, 9 September 2024 - All 23 players are out training at Tottenham Hotspur's training ground. In the press conference, featuring Carsley and Kane, it is revealed that the Captain will make his one hundredth appearance tomorrow night, and his intention is not to give up his international career any time soon, with a new aim of one hundred goals, inspired by the exploits of Cristiano Ronaldo.
