All information is
complete to and including England's last match, the third
of the 2024-25 season, against Greece on 10 October 2024.
Diary
Thursday, 8 February 2024 - At the
headquarters of UEFA at the Maison de la
Mutualité, 24 Rue Saint-Victor, Paris, France. Serbia's Aleksandr Kolarov
makes the draw of League B of UEFA Nation's League, and he pairs
England with Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece.
Thursday, 3 October 2024, 2.00pm - Lee Carsley
has named his latest 25-man squad for next week's Nations League
preliminary matches. There is a recall after seven years for Tottenham
strike Dominic Solanke. City's Kyle Walker and Madrid's Jude
Bellingham also return after returning to fitness. And Phil Foden,
Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins all keep their places after withdrawing
from last months squad. Jarrod Bowen and Eberechi Eze drop out, as
does the uncapped Tino Livramento, and the experienced Harry Maguire.
Sunday, 6 October 2024 -
Following the matches in the Premier League today, there are injury
concerns over Villa's Ezri Konsa, who was forced to leave the field
after twelve minutes with a hamstring injury, and Forest's Morgan
Gibbs-White, who was replaced after the 76 minute mark. His injury has
not been revealed. In the Bundesliga, meanwhile, Bayern's Harry Kane
was substituted in the 72nd minute following a clash with Frankfurt
defender Tuta. Kane travelled directly to the England camp to be
'examined by the FA's medical staff'.
Monday, 7 October 2024 - In the
afternoon, the players begin to arrive at St. George's Park to begin
preparations for this weeks Nations League preliminary matches. As
the evening sets in, and the players have had their medical
assessments, it is decided to allow Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Gibbs-White
and Ezri Konsa to return to respected clubs to continue treatment.
Tuesday, 8 October 2024 - 21
players are out training this morning at St. George's Park. Harry Kane
is indoors working on an individual programme, and remains a doubt for
the match against Greece, but is likely to return for Sunday's match.
Thomas Tuchel, 51, has signed a contract with the Football Association
that makes him the new Head Coach of the England senior team.
Announcements and unveilings will be delayed until after this months
international camp is over.
Wednesday, 9 October 2024 -
Newcastle United's Tino Livramento and Liverpool's Curtis Jones have
been added to the squad ahead of tomorrow night's clash with Greece.
Harry Kane continues his individual programme indoors, while Jack
Grealish misses training after picking up a minor knock. John
Stones is confirmed as the captain for the match at Wembley. 'An
honour I will cherish forever.' He will be the 128th known player to
have captained his national side. Carsley confirmed that Kane is not
fit enough to start the match and that Jack Grealish is also a doubt.
Thursday, 10 October 2024 - Both
Harry Kane and Jack Grealish will miss tonight's match because of
injury. Carsley confirmed "they will be okay in a couple of days, so
we are not going to take any gambles with them.'
England 1 Greece 2 - Lee Carsley’s all-out attacking strategy backfired badly as they slumped to a shock defeat.
Jude Bellingham's 87th-minute goal looked to have rescued a desperately disappointing England display after Vangelis Pavlidis gave Greece a deserved lead with a composed finish four minutes into the second half.
Greece responded to earn a deserved victory as Pavlidis struck again deep into stoppage time on a chastening night for England and interim boss Carsley.
In the absence of injured captain Harry Kane, Carsley went without a recognised striker by using Jude Bellingham in a false nine role and playing Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer.
The result was a disjointed, confused mess, as Carsley’s 100% record since succeeding Gareth Southgate was ended by a well-organised Greece side, who actually had the ball in the net five times only to see three ruled out for offside.
England were fortunate to survive until four minutes after the break, especially when keeper Jordan Pickford was stranded outside his area early on and had to be rescued by Levi Colwill’s superb goalline clearance from Tasos Bakasetas, but it was no surprise when Pavlidis put Greece ahead with a fine finish.
The Greek players interrupted their celebrations to lift a shirt bearing the name of George Baldock, their former international colleague, who died on Wednesday aged 31.
Carsley, seeing his tactical plan failing, sent on strike duo Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke, winning his second full cap seven years after his first.
England pushed for an unlikely victory after Bellingham fired high past Greece keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, but the visitors were a threat all night and punished Carsley's side once more in a dramatic finale.
Saturday, 12 October 2024 -
Arsenal's Bukayo Saka has withdrawn from the squad and returned to his
club for further assessment. He was substituted on Thursday after
picking up an injury to his right leg. Liverpool's Curtis Jones has
also withdrawn because of personal commitment. The squad travelled
to Helsinki Vantaa Airport late this afternoon, landing at 7:29pm
(EEST), following a two hour seventeen minute flight, on board
an Air Horizont Boeing 737-436 (9H-ZAZ) (Call sign: HAT1210).
Sunday, 13 October 2024 - Finland 1 England
3 - England recovered from the embarrassing loss to Greece abut were still not totally convincing as they finally overcame Finland in Helsinki.
Lee Carsley made six changes from the debacle against Greece, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford replaced by Dean Henderson, but England failed to sparkle until the side ranked 64th in the world and without a point ran out of steam late on.
The recalled Jack Grealish settled early England nerves with a cool finish from Angel Gomes’ excellent pass in the 18th minute, and Finland missed chances to put Carsley and his side under further pressure before Trent Alexander-Arnold's brilliant late free-kick settled the game.
Declan Rice scored from close range with six minutes left to give the scoreline a more satisfactory appearance for Carsley and England.
Finland striker Fredrik Jensen was their biggest culprit as they tried to inflict more misery on England, missing good first-half opportunities before somehow turning an effort over the top from only six yards after the break.
Alexander-Arnold, operating at left-back in another Carsley break from convention, provided a rare moment of quality in a game desperately lacking the commodity, curling a magnificent 25-yard free-kick high past Finland keeper Lukas Hradecky after 74 minutes.
Finland, by then, were out on their feet and Rice stole in for an easy finish three minutes from time.
The Finns at least delighted the packed 32,000 crowd and got the reward their gallant efforts deserved when Arttu Hoskonen scored as England failed to deal with a corner.
Tuesday, 15 October 2024 -
It is reported that former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has held initial talks with the Football Association about becoming the next England manager. One source says discussions are at an advanced stage and while no announcement is expected on Tuesday, the situation could develop quickly, with Tuchel now favourite to be given the job.
7pm - Thomas Tuchel is confirmed as
the new England manager. Carsley will remain in charge for November's
final Nations League matches.
Wednesday, 16 October 2024 - Thomas Tuchel is unveiled as the
new England Head Coach, and he has already appointed his assistant, in
Liverpool-born Anthony Barry. The FA said that Tuchel was the
'preferred candidate' from the several—'about ten'—that were interviewed.
