Diary

Monday, 11 May 2026 - Thomas Tuchel has submitted a provisional squad of between 35 and 55 names, as per FIFA requirements. That list will probably include those players included in the most recent squads, but also includes Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrad Branthwaite, Alex Scott, Luke Shaw and Danny Welbeck.

Friday, 22 May 2026, 10am - Thomas Tuchel names his 26-man World Cup Finals squad, revealed in a live broadcast from the National Stadium via the England app. The squad was announced with a film soundtracked by The Beatles’ Come Together. Filmed in New York and directed by Keane Shaw and Pete Martin, the film revealed each player’s name brought to life across the cityscape, bringing in subtle references to The Beatles and the British Invasion during the 1960s. However, because of leaks since yesterday, the squad is generally known, with no additional surprises.
The squad will come together from Monday 1 June at their preperation camp in Palm Beach, Florida, excluding those players from Arsenal and Crystal Palace, who will arrive following their respective European club finals. The entire squad will then head to the team’s base in Kansas City on Saturday, 13 June.

Monday, 1 June 2026 - England, without Arsenal's Declan Rice, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka plus Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, have arrived in the United States to begin their tournament preparations. Thomas Tuchel and a number of his squad flew from Birmingham Airport (10.20am) to Florida today for their pre-World Cup camp in West Palm Beach, on board a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350-1041 (VIR697), arriving at 6.38pm (2.38pm local time).

Tuesday, 2 June 2026 -
England's first training session takes place this morning, with temperatures forecast at 28ᶜ to 31ᶜ. All 26 players are participating, with the reserves covering for the Arsenal and Palace players.
At 3pm (BST), the squad numbers were released.

Saturday, 6 June 2026 - England 1 New Zealand 0 - Thomas Tuchel fielded entirely different teams in each half as World Cup preparations continued with a narrow victory against New Zealand in Tampa. Harry Kane, the team's ever-reliable captain, headed his 79th England goal in 113 games just seconds before half-time. Tuchel then made wholesale changes, electing to look at most of his squad as the countdown continued to England's opening group game against Croatia. Liverpool's 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, who is not in the 26-player World Cup squad, was given his debut to become the fifth youngest player to represent the team. The experimental nature of Tuchel's team was reflected in a low-key affair played in searing heat, but it will have proved to be a useful acclimatisation exercise before Wednesday's final pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando.

Sunday, 7 June 2026 - The four Arsenal players join in training for the first time. Tuchel confirms Declan Rice will be England's vice-captain throughout this summer's campaign.

Tuesday, 9 June 2026 - All 31 players are training at Palm Beach.

Wednesday, 10 June 2026 - England 3 Costa Rica 0 - England stepped up a gear in their final friendly before the World Cup with an impressive performance to beat Costa Rica in Orlando. After kick-off was delayed for an hour by storms, Declan Rice gave England an early lead with a deflected shot as he took advantage of good work by new Barcelona signing Anthony Gordon. Jude Bellingham started ahead of Morgan Rogers in the number 10 role and looked sharp as he pressed his claim to start in the team's World Cup opener against Croatia in Dallas on 17 June. Bellingham put Noni Madueke through in the first half, only for the Arsenal forward to hit the post after rounding Costa Rica keeper Patrick Sequeira when he looked sure to find an empty net. Real Madrid man Bellingham's brilliant run then helped England find a second goal after 68 minutes, when he set up substitute Eberechi Eze for a shot that was handled — Gordon scoring the resulting penalty. Ollie Watkins came off the bench and pounced with a close-range header three minutes from the end to give England a victory margin that reflected their dominance.

Thursday, 11 June 2026 - Training match: Miami FC 0 England 6 - The training ground game against the American second-tier side was split into two sections, with England winning the first by a single goal, and followed up with a 5-0 victory. Sources state that Ivan Toney was the stand-out player, scoring a hat-trick. Jordan Henderson, Ethan Nwaneri and a 'worldie' from Rio Ngumhoa. Rio's goal said to be a 'breathtaking strike from distance'. Marc Guéhi and Kobbie Mainoo also impressed. Alex Scott and Josh King also took part, and the four youngsters will leave camp this weekend when the senior squad move on to Kansas.
The squad enjoyed a team-bonding meal in Miami tonight.

Saturday, 13 June 2026 - England were victims of a theft of their training equipment before their arrival in Kansas City today. The FA is trying to ascertain what was stolen, with balls and boots among the items feared to have been taken, after vehicles transferring equipment to their Swope Soccer Village base in Kansas City were broken into. Thomas Tuchel left West Palm Beach International Airport at 10.42am and his squad arrived in Kansas City Downtown Airport at 12.22pm, following a 2 hr 39 minute journey onboard the Global X Airbus A320-214 (GXA601) this afternoon and the equipment was due to be in place beforehand. Police officers, who are in touch with the FA, were on site on last night dealing with the matter. It is understood two arrests have been made in connection with the episode. A spokesman for Kansas Police said: "We are investigating a possible theft of equipment from a team vehicle that arrived in Kansas City with items missing this evening. The investigation is ongoing." The theft could potentially disrupt some of Tuchel's preparation. The England players will undertake their first full training day tomorrow.
The majority of the equipment was recovered before the end of the day.

Tuesday, 16 June 2026 - Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento has been ruled out of England's World Cup campaign with a calf injury and has been replaced by Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah. Livramento sustained the injury during a training session on Sunday. Livramento's involvement in the tournament had already been in doubt after he missed the final five weeks of the season with a thigh injury. Chalobah, who has one appearance, will not join up with the squad until after the Croatia match. He is on his way to England's camp in Kansas City as the rest of the squad head to Dallas. Outfield players who sustain a serious injury or illness can be replaced in a World Cup squad up to 24 hours before the team's first match of the tournament gets under way. Reece James is Tuchel's first choice at right-back but there are also question marks about his fitness, following another injury-plagued campaign. The 26-year-old missed nine games for Chelsea at the end of the season because of a hamstring injury. Other options who are already in the England squad include Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa. Spence, who can play on both flanks, has featured six times under Tuchel while Konsa, predominantly a centre-back, has played 11 times, including nine starts. Chalobah has not featured for England since June 2025 when he played the full 90 minutes in a friendly against Senegal, but was on the bench for multiple World Cup qualifiers under Tuchel. Like Konsa, the 26-year-old's preferred position is centre-back.
All other 25 players, including training goalkeeper Jason Steele, are working out at Swope Soccer Village before flying to Dallas.

Wednesday, 17 June 2026 - England 4 Croatia 2 - England made a winning start to their World Cup campaign as they overpowered Croatia in a thriller in Dallas. Thomas Tuchel's side demonstrated strength in attack and frailty in defence, but possessed the firepower to finally overcome Croatia and set the platform for progress in Group L. Harry Kane put England ahead on 12 minutes with a twice taken spot-kick after Luka Modric fouled Noni Madueke, Croatia keeper Dominik Livakovic saving his first attempt but penalised for encroaching off his goalline. Croatia, always dangerous opponents, were level after 36 minutes when Martin Baturina sent a powerful drive high past Jordan Pickford, who got a touch but could not keep the ball out. Kane, inevitably, restored England's lead three minutes before the break with a powerful header from Declan Rice's corner, bringing him level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals, his 81st in 115 England appearances. England, however, never looked at ease defensively, Croatia equalising again with a well-worked goal seconds before half-time, Petar Musa steering Ivan Perisic's header beyond Pickford. Jude Bellingham showed exactly why Tuchel selected him ahead of Morgan Rogers with a powerful run and finish moments after the break as the Three Lions established control once more. Marcus Rashford, on as a substitute, ended any lingering concerns with a composed finish five minutes from time as England move on to face Ghana in Boston.

Thursday, 18 June 2026 - Sporting Kansas City 1 England 5 - England continued their World Cup preparations with another dominant display behind closed doors at Swope Soccer Village base camp. They cruised to a 5-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City in two 25-minute training matches. Thomas Tuchel handed opportunities to players who did not feature in yesterdays 4-2 win. Marc Guéhi, Morgan Rogers and Djed Spence also played valuable roles in the shortened contest. Ivan Toney continued his outstanding form by scoring a hat-trick to strengthen his case for a bigger role. Rogers and Ollie Watkins were also on target as England comfortably outclassed the Major League Soccer outfit, who played two separate sides. Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah was the only member of the squad not to feature, watching from the sidelines as Tuchel rotated his options following the demanding Croatia game.
Declan Rice is expected to be available for England's next match against Ghana after suffering from lower back pain during the win over Croatia. The midfielder was substituted midway through the second half, raising concerns about his fitness. But it is understood the back issue is unlikely to prevent Rice from playing against Ghana. The complaint is one that the Arsenal midfielder, 27, has been carrying for a while and will require managing during the tournament. Speaking after the game, manager Thomas Tuchel said: "Declan had some unusual ball losses and I saw a bit of discomfort. And then I asked him, and he pointed directly to his lower back, upper hamstring, that he feels the discomfort. I didn't want to take any risks, I hope it's nothing more. Declan just reassured me at the end. We will take care of it, and it's nothing big to worry about."

Saturday, 20 June 2026 - Bukayo Saka was the only player not involved in group training as England continued preparations for their second match of the World Cup against Ghana. The Arsenal winger spent this afternoon's session indoors working on an individual programme as he continues to deal with an Achilles issue he has been managing since March. Thomas Tuchel was on the training pitch at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City with 25 of his 26 players as baseball team the KC Royals watched on alongside opponents St Louis Cardinals after the two had played on Friday night. Before the tournament, Tuchel said Saka would require managing through the opening stages because of what is understood to be an Achilles tendinitis issue. Saka has insisted he was ready to play and was prepared to "gamble" on his fitness to help the team during the World Cup. However, Tuchel said the 24-year-old is unlikely to start until the final Group L game against Panama in New Jersey on Saturday. "Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready "I think once we go to the last game of this group he will be ready." Saka has been carrying the issue for some time, and while there was concern behind the scenes at Arsenal, they deemed the forward fit enough to start regularly during their triumphant title run-in.

Sunday, 21 June 2026 - Bukayo Saka has trained with the England squad to provide a fitness boost to Thomas Tuchel. The Arsenal winger joined in with the other 25 players.

Tuesday, 23 June 2026 - England 0 Ghana 0 - England were unable to repeat the flowing football that overpowered Croatia in their first World Cup game as they were held to a draw by Ghana at Boston Stadium. Thomas Tuchel's side knew victory would confirm a place in the last 32 - but they were left frustrated by the stubborn resistance and organisation from Ghana. England took 57 minutes to muster a shot on target and once again lived dangerously in defence, surviving anxious moments when Ghana hit them on the counter-attack as the contest became a disjointed affair. Tuchel turned to Bukayo Saka, whose minutes are being managed because of a lingering Achilles problem, and replaced Jude Bellingham with Morgan Rogers in an attempt to break the stalemate. Saka forced a fine save from Ghana keeper Benjamin Asare, while another substitute Nico O'Reilly headed against the bar, leaving Tuchel and England to settle for a point. Marc Guehi also had a header cleared off the line. Even though England applied pressure, they appeared very fortunate not to concede a penalty late on when Ezri Konsa challenged Prince Kwabena Adu in the area, bringing him down without making any contact with the ball. England remain top of Group L, but must now wait until their final game against Panama to ensure qualification for the World Cup knockout phase.

Wednesday, 24 June 2026 - England will assess the fitness of Reece James and Declan Rice before their final World Cup group game against Panama. Rice, 27, limped out of the Boston Stadium after England's goalless draw against Ghana on Tuesday with heavy strapping on his left calf. Sources have indicated that there is no major concern the injury could impact his involvement on a longer-term basis here in the United States. But it is understood the issue requires assessment and rest before a decision can be made on his availability for Panama on Saturday, with Thomas Tuchel and his staff needing to weigh up the risks of playing him. James will also require assessment as England approach Saturday's match in New Jersey. The 26-year-old completed the full game against Ghana but will be checked by medics over the next 24 hours. The Chelsea captain has a history of injury and his load will be monitored closely.

Thursday, 25 June 2026 - Reece James missed training with England today which has thrown his fitness into doubt for the final Group L game. The 26-year-old right-back suffered a hamstring issue in the goalless draw with Ghana on Tuesday. It now remains to be seen if the Chelsea defender is fit enough to start or be an option from the bench in the final group game at New York New Jersey Stadium. James is a key member of the starting XI under manager Thomas Tuchel and has been selected in both World Cup games so far. Declan Rice was also absent from today's session in Kansas City. But sources indicate the 27-year-old midfielder's fitness is less of a concern. It remains to be seen if Tuchel is willing to start Rice - particularly given he is at risk of suspension for the round of 32 after he was booked against Ghana.

Friday, 26 June 2026 - Concerns over Reece James' availability are set to extend to England's potential last-32 match as the Chelsea defender recovers from a hamstring injury. James has missed both training sessions and will miss Saturday's final World Cup group game versus Panama. The 26-year-old was following an individual programme inside the training base in Kansas City and was not on the pitch with the rest of his team-mates. And it is understood there are also fears the Chelsea defender will miss the start of England's knockout fixtures. However, Declan Rice made a return.  The Arsenal midfielder is expected to be available for the Panama game. Rice's midfield partner Elliot Anderson - poised for a £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City - was another who was absent from England's session on Thursday, but he was present on Friday.

Saturday morning, 27 June 2026 - England's place in the knockout stages of the World Cup has been confirmed. They sit on four points after two games - meaning they are at least guaranteed one of the eight third-placed qualification spots. Four other teams sit on four points - Sweden, Ecuador, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Paraguay - with four groups, including England's still to wrap up. Uruguay's defeat by Spain overnight was the result that confirmed England's place in the last 32.
