  Robert Kelly
Birth 16 November 1893 at 8 Warrington Court in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire [registered in Wigan, March 1894]
 

According to the 1901 census, Robert is the youngest of four children, all sons, to Irish parents John and Catherine. They live at 161 Heath Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield. His father is a coal pit sinker.

 

According to the 1911 census, seventeen year old Kelly is a miner in the local colliery along with other members of his family, namely his father and elder brother Joseph. They live with his mother, who its revealed has had nine children in total and that five have died. They live at 15 Laburnum Street, still in Ashton-in Makerfield.

  According to the 1921 census, Robert, a professional footballer (for Burnley FC), is one of two boarders living at the home of Emma Pollard at 14 Clevelands Road in Burnley.
Marriage to May Ogden, 12 March 1924 at St. Cuthbert's Church, Lytham [registered in Fylde, March 1924]. Ceremony performed by Rev. H.G. Rosher. In front of only two witnesses. On the evening, Kelly helped Burnley qualify for the FA Cup semi-finals, before playing for the Football League on the Saturday and leaving for their honeymoon in Scotland.
Returned to live at Sans Souci, Milner Road in the Ansdell area of Lytham.
  According to the 1939 register, Robert, a hotel manager and football club manager, and May, are still married and are living at 10 Richmond Road in Lytham St. Anne's.
Death 22 September 1969, aged 75 years 310 days [registered in Fylde, Lancashire, September 1969].

Playing Career

Club(s) Began his football career with junior club Ashton White Star FC and Ashton Central FC. He was also playing in the Liverpool County Combination League with Earlestown FC, from where he joined St. Helen's Town FC in August 1913. By November, he had joined Burnley FC on the 1st, having paid £275. During the war, served with the R.F.A.. After 277 league appearances and 88 goals, on 1 December 1925, he joined Sunderland AFC for a British record fee £6550. A little over a year later, and eleven goals in fifty league outings, he had joined Huddersfield Town AFC on 10 February 1927 for a £3500 fee. Another 186 league appearances followed and 39 goals followed, before Kelly then joined Preston North End FC on 18 July 1932, appointed as club captain a month later. 78 league appearances and seventeen goals followed, before joining Carlisle United FC as player-manager on 8 March 1935. He retired from playing halfway through the following season, having played twelve league appearances, scoring just the once.

Management Career

Club(s) Having retired from playing during the 1935-36 season, he remained as Carlisle United FC's manager until he took over the seat at Stockport County FC on 13 November 1936, a position held until his resignation on 16 June 1938. After the war, he had spells with Sporting Clube de Portugal trainer from August 1946. Managed FC St. Gallen from 1949-51. SC Heerenveen 1951-55 and Kooger FC from 1955. Remained in management with Barry Town FC from December 1960.
