The B team had the same practise strategy as the national side. They
were due to play Manchester City FC under the floodlights on 28
February, but ice prevented that session, and then Manchester United
FC the day after, that too being iced over. But they did manage to
train at Preston North End's Deepdale ground, when the match was
postponed. (PNE had won 1-0). |

Match Report
by
Jimmy Stevenson, Daily Mirror, 2 March 1955 |
The bleak bog that
was Ibrox Park yesterday was hopeless for play, and there was no
alternative but to call off the Scotland-England "B" international which
was to have been played there tonight. Water lay down the center of the
field. Other parts were like marshland. "We
are looking around to see if a new date can be found, but no decision is
possible, yet." S.F.A. Assistant Secretary, William Allan, told me
yesterday. "We informed the England party in Lancs in good time to prevent
them travelling north." The England players were in the middle of a
thirty-minute each-way practice match at Preston when their team-manager,
Walter Winterbottom, learned that the game was off. He let them finish the
practice game—against a scratch Preston side—before breaking the news.
The England team lost 1—0, Preston's goal being scored by Foster, himself
a former "B" international. Afterwards the England party
lunched together and then dispersed. Some travelled to Manchester nd the
rest to London with Mr. Winterbottom. Before leaving Deepdale, Mr.
Winterbottom expressed his disappointment that the match was off. "There
is the consolation however, that we shall get a far truer idea of the
progress of our young players by seeing them in better conditions later."
he said. The Scots team dispersed to their homes from Largs yesterday
afternoon, disappointed at missing an international chance. Most realised,
however, that a tough game in strength-sapping mud could have ruined
expectations.
