Match Report by Frank McGhee, Daily Mirror, Wednesday, 27 February 1957

YOUNG England should have had this game all sewn up and victory tucked away by half-time at Ibrox Park. Two glorious golden chances were squandered by centre forward Brian Clough in the first five minutes. Twice he just tapped the ball lovingly when a full-blooded swipe was called for—and twice the ball went well wide of a gaping goal. England did go ahead in the eleventh minute.
Young Lancashire cricketer Jack Dyson, of Manchester City, playing his first representative match at inside left, was the hero.
Controlling a difficult thigh-height cross from outside left David Pegg brilliantly, he brought it down and smashed the ball into the roof of the net with his left foot. It was twenty minutes before a Scottish attack reached the English penalty area without breaking down.
Then only a fantastic miss by outside left Ian Crawford prevented an equaliser.
From only six yards out, with no one to beat, he headed a cross from his Hearts team-mate, Johnny Hamilton, high over the bar. Six minutes later, Crawford put Scotland level from a penalty awarded by Referee Smith, of Newport, against left half Dick Neal for a foul on Alec Young, the Scottish inside left. And but for brilliant work by England's goalkeeper, Alan Hodgkinson, it would have been Scotland who crossed over with a half-time lead. Crawford sent his centre forward Max Murray away with a beautiful long pass. Hodgkinson came out to narrow the angle and saved for a corner. A mistake by goalkeeper Forsyth nearly gave England another goal two minutes after the interval. Instead of gathering a shot from outside right Alan Finney he punched it out—straight to Johnny Haynes. The Fulham schemer hit it straight back past Forsyth—only to throw his hands high in anguish as right back Alex Parker stopped it on the line.
Then Scotland, the team of misfits, replacements and reserves fought back.
Murray shot over the bar, and Hodgkinson saved a shot from inside man Young at the second attempt. Clough had another bad miss in the fifty-fifth minute when he shot a perfect chance straight at the Scottish goalkeeper.
Only brilliant goalkeeping by Hodkinson kept Scotland out. He was getting precious little help from the rest of his defence.

Even centre half Trevor Smith, of Birmingham, usually so safe and steady, showed traces of kick-anywhere panic.

Match Report as appears in the F.A. Yearbook 1957-58 page 33

Conditions were not very good for this game at Ibrox Park, Glasgow, on the evening of February 26th; it was hazy and misty overhead with a crisp frosty ground underneath, and the 14,000 onlookers received little reward for their fortitude and keenness. England scored her goal in the eleventh minute when Pegg pulled back a centre to his inside colleague; Dyson cleverly brought the ball down with one foot and immediately shot it into the net with his other. A quarter of an hour later, Scotland's inside-left was pulled down in the penalty area and Crawford equalised from the resulting kick. Clough was well-marked by the Hibernian centre-half, and only Haynes, Clayton and Smith enhanced their reputations.
