All
information is complete to and including England's last match, the eighth
of the 2022-23 season, against Italy on 23 March 2023.
Diary
Sunday, 9 October 2022 - England
have been drawn in the same group as Italy - the team that beat them
in Euro 2020 final. Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta are the other
teams drawn into Group C.
Monday, 10 October 2022 -
The fixtures for Group C qualification group are announced.
Thursday, 16 March 2023 -
Gareth
Southgate names his first squad of the year and the first since the
2022 World Cup Finals. His 25-man squad sees the return of Ben
Chilwell, Marc Guéhi, Reece James and the uncapped Ivan Toney,
but Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady and Raheem Sterling (unfit)
miss out.
Monday, 20 March 2023 -
Following the weekends matches in the Premier League and FA Cup
quarter-final matches, the England squad gather at St. George's Park.
Marcus Rashford withdraws from the squad after picking up a knock in
United's match with Fulham yesterday. Goalkeeper Nick Pope has also
withdrawn from the group because of an injury in his Premier League
match against Nottingham Forest on Friday, with his vacancy being
handed to veteran Tottenham goalkeeper, Fraser Forster. Mason Mount is
also unavailable to continue his rehabilitation with Chelsea.
Tuesday, 21 March 2023 - All 23
members of the squad enjoy their first full day's training at St.
George's Park. Gareth Southgate's former teammate at Middlesbrough,
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, has joined the coaching set-up.
Wednesday, 22 March 2023 - Following
another day's training at St. George's Park, where all 23 members of
the squad were involved, the party leave for Naples. Leaving
Birmingham Airport at 3.45pm, on board Titan Airways Airbus A321-211
(G-POWN), flight ZT321, arriving at Aeroporto Internazionale de Napoli
at 7pm.
Thursday, 23 March 2023 -
Italy 1 England 2 - England opened their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a first away
victory against Italy since 1961. Declan Rice gave England an early
lead when he scored from close range after Kane's shot was blocked
before the captain put memories of his penalty miss against France in
the World Cup quarter-final in Qatar aside with an emphatic spot-kick in the 44th minute when he beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from the
penalty spot. Italy,
whistled off at half-time in their first international in Naples for a
decade, improved as England became sloppy. Debutant Mateo Retegui was the beneficiary of poor work from Harry Maguire, whose
failed attempt to close down the danger on the edge of the box allowed
the Italians to shift the ball to the 23-year-old to drill an unerring
finish past Jordan Pickford after 56 minutes. England's drop
in performance was compounded by Luke Shaw's second yellow card with
10 minutes left but they hung on for a vital win.
Friday, 24 March 2023 -
The party leave Aeroporto Internazionale de Napoli at 1.05am, again,
on board the Titan Airways Airbus A321-211 (G-POWN), flight ZT321,
arriving at Stanstead Airport at 2.30am.
Saturday, 25 March 2023 - Reece
James has been forced to withdraw from the squad and return to his
club after reporting a minor hamstring injury. Along with the
suspension of Luke Shaw, it means Southgate will only have 21 players
to choose from for tomorrow's match at Wembley, with no replacements
called upon. There were also concerns over the fitness of Jordan
Henderson, Kalvin Phillips and Jude Bellingham, but all three have
been announced as available. The party underwent various training
sessions at Tottenham Hotspur's training ground at Cheshunt.
Sunday, 26 March
2023 - On the morning of the fixture at Wembley, Phil Foden has
been admitted to hospital to have his appendix removed, ruling him out
of the match later this afternoon.
