Background

The sixteenth European Championship Finals were awarded to twelve European cities on 6 December 2012 at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Genève, as a 'romantic' one-off event to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the competition.

On 21 March 2012, UEFA announced that anyone expressing an interest in hosting the 2020 Tournament would need to do so before 15 May 2012. Turkey, a Celtic (Scotland, Ireland and Wales), and a joint bid from Azerbaijan and Georgia, all submitted bids.

As these submissions provided a more than lacklustre response, UEFA President Michel Platini declared on 30 June 2012 that the Tournament may be spread over '12 or 13 cities'.

Thirteen venues were selected and announced on 19 September 2014.
Brussels was removed from that selection, and instead handed to Wembley Stadium.

In an unprecedented move, because of the outbreak of Co-Vid19, Euro 2020 was postponed for a year and will now take place from 11 June 2021.

The Draw
