When schools' football resumed after World War II, the only age-restricted England team in the first season, were the under-14s managed by the ESFA.

Season 1946-47

3 May 1947: Wales met England in the first post-war schoolboy international, in the Victory Shield, at Swansea. England won 3-0.

10 May 1947: England drew 1-1 with Scotland in their first post-war home game, at Goodison Park, Liverpool.

29 May 1947: England met (the Republic of) Ireland for the first time at schoolboy level, and lost 8-3 at Dalymount Park, Dublin, against an under-16 team.

30 May 1947: England failed to beat (Northern) Ireland for the first time, losing 2-0 at Solitude, Belfast.

Season 1947-48

The Football Association introduced its first age-restricted, under-18, England youth team.

25 October 1947: England met Scotland in the first youth international, at Doncaster, in the Amateur Youth Championship. England won 4-2.

28 February 1948: England met Wales in a youth international for the first time, at Wycombe, in the Amateur Youth Championship. England won 4-3.

10 April 1948: England met Wales in their first under-15 schoolboy international, at Coventry, in the Victory Shield. England won 2-1.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Norman Deeley and Albert Quixall.

15 April 1948: The first International Youth Tournament (played in London and Watford) began for eight teams from western Europe. England beat Wales, 4-0 in a quarter-final at Loftus Road.

16 April 1948: England met foreign opposition for the first time at youth level, beating Belgium, 3-1 in the International Youth Tournament semi-final at West Ham.

17 April 1948: England (the hosts) met the Netherlands for the first time at youth level, and beat them, 3-2 in the final at Tottenham to win the International Youth Tournament.

24 April 1948: Scotland met England in an under-15 schoolboy international for the first time, at Aberdeen, in the Victory Shield. Scotland won 1-0.

8 May 1948: (The Republic of) Ireland travelled to England for a schoolboy international for the first time, and won 1-0 at Griffin Park, Brentford, with an under-16 team.

15 May 1948: England met (Northern) Ireland in an under-15 schoolboy international for the first time, at Old Trafford, Manchester, in the Victory Shield. England won 4-0.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Dennis Viollet.

15 May 1948: (Northern) Ireland met England in a youth international for the first time, at Cliftonville, in the Amateur Youth Championship, as England failed to win for the first time, in a 2-2 draw.

International Youth Tournament Winners: England

Season 1948-49

(Northern) Ireland's schoolboy matches continued to be at under-14 level and their results were, therefore, excluded from the Victory Shield.

30 October 1948: England visited Scotland for a youth international for the first time, and lost for the first time, by 3-1 at Aberdeen.

26 February 1949: England visited Wales for a youth international for the first time, and failed to beat them for the first time, in a goalless draw at Swansea.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Doug Holden.

9 April 1949: Wales beat England in the Victory Shield for the first time since 1924, and for the first time in a schoolboy under-15 international, by 4-3 at Swansea.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Stan Anderson.

18 April 1949: FIFA took over the International Youth Tournament which began in the Netherlands for seven teams from western Europe, and included Scotland for the first time. England (the defending champions) met (Northern) Ireland for the first time at any level on foreign soil, in a quarter-final in Haarlem, and lost on the toss of a coin following a 3-3 draw after extra time.

19 April 1949: England met Austria for the first time at youth level, and won 4-2 after extra time in the FIFA Youth Tournament supplementary round in Zeist.

20 April 1949: FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Eddie Clamp and Johnny Haynes.

21 April 1949: England met Scotland for the first time at any level on foreign soil, and lost 1-0 after extra time in the FIFA Youth Tournament fifth-place play-off in Utrecht.

23 April 1949: England beat (the Republic of) Ireland at schoolboy level for the first time, 7-0 at West Ham.

14 May 1949: England beat Scotland at home in a schoolboy international for the first time since 1936, and for the first time at under-15, by 4-0 at Newcastle.

14 May 1949: (Northern) Ireland visited England in the Amateur Youth Championship for the first time, and lost 4-2 at Hull.

25 May 1950: The FIFA Youth Tournament began in Austria (with one game in Teplice, in Czechoslovakia) for six teams from western Europe, and included Luxembourg and Switzerland for the first time. England met Luxembourg for the first time at youth level, and lost 2-1 in a quarter-final in Vienna.

26 May 1950: England met Switzerland for the first time at youth level, and won 2-1 after extra time in the FIFA Youth Tournament fifth-place play-off in Stockerau.

29 May 1950: England won a schoolboy international in the Republic of Ireland for the first time, by 3-2 at Dalymount Park.

22 March 1951: The FIFA Youth Tournament began on the Côte d'Azur (France and Monaco) for eight teams from central and western Europe, and included Yugoslavia for the first time. England met Belgium for the first time at any level in a neutral country, and failed to beat them for the first time, in a quarter-final in Cannes, losing on the toss of a coin, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

24 March 1951: England won a youth international in France for the first time, by beating Switzerland, 2-0 in the FIFA Youth Tournament supplementary round in Nice.

26 March 1951: England met the Netherlands for the first time at youth level on foreign soil, and won 2-1 in the FIFA Youth Tournament fifth-place play-off in Cannes.

15 April 1952: England met Spain (the hosts) at youth level for the first time, and lost 4-1 in the FIFA Youth Tournament semi-final in Barcelona.

17 April 1952: England failed to beat Austria at youth level for the first time, losing on the toss of a coin, following a 5-5 draw after extra time in the FIFA Youth Tournament third-place play-off in Barcelona.

10 May 1952: FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Wilf McGuinness.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Melia.

31 March 1953: The FIFA Youth Tournament began in Belgium for 16 teams, and included Argentina (the first non-European entrant), Hungary, Saar, Turkey and West Germany for the first time. England met the hosts for the first time in Belgium at youth level, and won 2-0 after extra time in the first round in Brussels.

2 April 1953: England met Yugoslavia for the first time at youth level, in the FIFA Youth Tournament quarter-final in Liège, and lost on the toss of a coin following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

4 April 1953: England met West Germany for the first time at any level, and won 3-1 in the FIFA Youth Tournament fifth-place play-off semi-final in Boom.

5 April 1953: England met (the Republic of) Ireland for the first time at youth level, and won 2-0 in the FIFA Youth Tournament fifth-place play-off final in Leuven.

10 April 1954: The FIFA Youth Tournament began in western, central West Germany (Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate) for 17 European teams, plus Argentina, and included the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and Portugal for the first time. England beat (Northern) Ireland for the first time on foreign soil at any level, by 5-0 in their first group match in Brühl.

11 April 1954: England met Hungary (the defending champions) for the first time at youth level, and lost 3-1 in a FIFA Youth Tournament group match in Düsseldorf.

13 April 1954: England met Saar for the first time at any level, and drew 1-1 in a FIFA Youth Tournament group match in Dortmund.

15 April 1954: England met the hosts in West Germany for the first time at youth level, and failed to beat them for the first time at any level, in a 2-2 draw in a FIFA Youth Tournament group match in Gelsenkirchen.

19 April 1954: England met Portugal for the first time at youth level, and failed to beat them for the first time at any level, losing 2-0 in the FIFA Youth Tournament eleventh-place play-off in Bonn.

21 November 1954: England travelled to the Netherlands for the first time for a youth international, and failed to win for the first time, losing 3-2 in Arnhem, with their first professional team, in the charge of coach, George Smith.

19 January 1955: England beat Italy, 5-1 in their first under-23 home game, at Stamford Bridge.

8 February 1955: Scotland met England for the first time at under-23 level. England won 6-0 at Clyde.

19 February 1955: FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Peter Brabrook.

6 April 1955: The FIFA Youth Tournament began in Tuscany, in Italy for 19 European teams, and included Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Italy (the hosts), Poland and Romania for the first time.

7 April 1955: Czechoslovakia met England for the first time at youth level, and won 1-0 in their opening FIFA Youth Tournament match in Lucca.

9 April 1955: England beat Saar for the first time at any level, by 3-1 in the FIFA Youth Tournament in Prato.

11 April 1955: England failed to beat Switzerland for the first time at youth level, in a goalless draw in the FIFA Youth Tournament in Florence.

18 April 1955: The English Grammar Schools' Football Association staged its first under-18 schoolboy international. England beat Scotland, 2-1 at Celtic Park, Glasgow.

1 October 1955: England met Denmark, their first Scandinavian opponents at youth level, and won 9-2 at Plymouth. George Curtis was now in charge of the professional youth team as they won for the first time.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Alan Peacock.

5 November 1955: The professional England youth team met the Netherlands at home for the first time, and beat them for the first time, by 3-1 at Norwich.

8 February 1956: Scotland visited England for the first time at under-23 level. England won 3-1 at Hillsborough, Sheffield.

18 February 1956: FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Johnny Byrne and Chris Crowe.

3 March 1956: Scotland avoided defeat in England for the first time in a youth international, in a 2-2 draw at Preston.

11 March 1956: England visited Switzerland for the first time for a youth international, and won 2-0 in Schaffhausen.

28 March 1956: The FIFA Youth Tournament began in Hungary for 16 European teams, and included Greece for the first time. Bulgaria met England for the first time at any level (though they had met an English amateur team representing Great Britain in an Olympic qualifier, five months earlier), and won 2-1 in their opening match in Salgótarján.

30 March 1956: England met the hosts in Hungary for the first time at youth level, and lost 4-2 in the FIFA Youth Tournament in Tatabánya.

3 April 1956: Northern Ireland avoided defeat in England for the first time in a schoolboy international, in a 1-1 draw at Norwich.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for Bobby Tambling.

16 April 1956: Scotland visited England for the first time for an under-18 schoolboy international. England won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

21 April 1956: England lost a schoolboy international at Wembley for the first time, 2-1 to Scotland.

25 October 1956: FIRST INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCE for John Angus.

7 November 1956: The professional England youth team visited Belgium for the first time, and were leading 3-2 after 65 minutes when it was abandoned.

2 February 1957: Luxembourg visited England for the first time at any level (apart from amateur), and England beat them for the first time in a youth international, by 7-1 at West Ham.

16 April 1957: Austria beat England for the first time in a youth international (apart from on the toss of a coin in the 1952 tournament), by 3-0 in a UEFA Youth Tournament group match in Barcelona.

18 April 1957: England met Greece for the first time at any level. Greece won 3-2 in a UEFA Youth Tournament group match in Barcelona.

30 April 1957: Scotland beat England for the first time in an under-18 schoolboy international, by 3-0 at Celtic Park.

19 May 1957: England visited Bulgaria for the first time at any level. The Bulgarian B team beat England's under-23s (under the charge of Bill Nicholson for the three-match tour), 2-1 in Sofia.

22 May 1957: England visited the continent for the first time for a schoolboy international, and beat West Germany, 3-1 in Stuttgart.
