to and including England's last match, the seventh of the 1990-91 season, against
USSR on 21 May 1991
Diary
Monday, 13 May 1991 -
Former Newcastle United starts Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley were
today left out of the England team to play Argentina at Wembley and
the Summer Tour. While Paul Gascoigne plays against the former World
Champions he is allowed to miss the tour to Australia, New Zealand and
Malaysia. Waddle is wanted by his club Marseille for a key League game
and European Cup Final on 29 May, after England leave for the tour. No
Liverpool, Arsenal or Manchester United players are included on the
tour because of club commitments.
Saturday, 18 May 1991 - Tottenham
Hotspur win their eighth FA Cup final, but lose Paul Gascoigne to
injury, after his impetuous tackle on Gary Charles not only left him
out of the rest of the risks his place in the England team, but also
his proposed transfer to Lazio.
Tuesday, 21 May 1991 - David Platt took England boss Graham
Taylor into seventh heaven at Wembley, in front of the men who want to
spend £5 million for him. Marseille had representatives watch Platt
score twice in a 3-1 win against the Russians, taking Taylor's record
as England boss to seven games unbeaten. Platt recently turned down a
£4 million transfer to Bari. Other Italian clubs, Lazio's manager,
Carlo Regalia, and secretary, Maurice Mancini, were in attendance
also, and Arsenal are also in the hunt for his signature.
Thursday, 23 May 1991 - Peter
Beardsley has been drafted into the England squad for Saturday's clash
with Argentina. The Liverpool striker replaces the injured Paul
Gascoigne, but he won't be on board next Monday when Graham Taylor
flies his squad out to Australia. There is a major breakthrough for
Sheffield United striker Brian Deane, who has been given a late ticket
for the trip.
Chelsea left-back Tony Dorigo had talks today with Leeds before
deciding to become Howard Wilkinson's third signing in 48 hours. David Batty
wins his first England start. The
22-year-old Leeds midfield man rated the new Billy Bremner by Elland
Road fans keeps his place after a substitute outing in the midweek win
over Russia. Graham Taylor makes six changes, with Arsenal and
Nottingham Forest players returning to the line-up as England bid to
land the triangular tournament title. David Seaman, who made three
successive appearances before stepping down against the Soviets, is
back in goal, with his Highbury colleague Lee Dixon reinstated at
right-back. Forest's Stuart Pearce and Des Walker are also recalled to
the back four, as Taylor backs experience to give England a successful
send-off to the four-match summer tour. Gary Lineker returns as
captain alongside ex-Leicester teammate Alan Smith. David Platt, Geoff
Thomas, Mark Wright and John Barnes are all retained.
Friday, 24 May 1991 - Leeds continued their
end-of-season recruitment campaign when they signed Chelsea's
left-back Tony Dorigo. The former Aston Villa player signed a four
year contract at Elland Road before returning south to link up with
the England squad. The fee has yet to be agreed. Manchester United,
Liverpool and Rangers were all believed to be also interested.
