Club Career |
Club(s) |
Began his career in Cornwall with Heavy
Transport FC, Bugle FC and St. Blazey FC, before being spotted by the
Bristol Rovers FC tea-lady who was on holiday in Cornwall. Rovers promptly
signed him on 6 August 1987 on a free transfer. He played in 101
league matches before his transfer to Crystal Palace FC for a
record fee for a goalkeeper, £1 million on 21 November 1989. His
guardianship of the goal in 272 league appearances saw
him being transferred to Leeds United AFC for another goalkeeping record
transfer fee, £2¼ million on 26 July 1996.
After another 207 league appearances, Everton FC beat Chelsea FC to the
signature of Martyn as an understudy to their existing number-one keepers.
But Martyn got his chance after Richard Wright was injured, and his form
was dramatic, that even after Wright's recovery, Nigel remained Everton's
number one until his retirement on 8 June 2006 due to an ankle injury.
Even turning down the opportunity to an England recall. He played
86 Premier League appearances for Everton...taking his total
number of league appearances to 680. |
