Turkey on 1 May 1991
Diary
Friday, 10 May 1991 -
Chris Waddle is back in England's squad for the
Challenge Cup match against Russia on 21 May. And the Marseille ace is
apparently back in favour with manager Graham Taylor. Waddle was
controversially left out of the England side for the European
Championship qualifier against Turkey, as were Bryan Robson and Peter
Beardsley, each believing their international careers were over. But
today, Taylor has named Waddle and Beardsley in the squad to face the
Russians at Wembley. Taylor said: "There is no major issue about this.
I have to choose what I consider are the right squads for games. For
this match I have chosen Waddle. There has never been any doubt in my
mind that he has the ability to do a job for England." England will be
looking for a new captain with Gary Lineker paying in the FA Cup Final
three days beforehand. He will likely stick with vice-captain Mark
Wright. On Monday, Taylor will name his second squad, when he will
have his Tottenham and Nottingham Forest players available.
Tuesday, 14 May 1991 - Marseille
have pulled Chris Waddle out of the England squad. The French club
have decided that Waddle would be unable to play at Wembley because of
club commitments. The French FA are considering Marseille's request to
bring forward their League match with Nice from 25 May to 22 May. It
is in order to help Marseille in their quest to secure their first
ever European Cup victory on 29 May, as well as a French League and
Cup double. Taylor said: "The European Cup final is the most important
game in the club's history and Chris is a key member of that team. We
have had a good relationship with Marseille in the past. They have
always been good about releasing him."
