Playing Career |
Club(s) |
An Englishman
in Ireland, George junior followed his father and his managerial career,
becoming an amateur with Ards FC of Northern Ireland. Following
significant interest from Arsenal FC, and Leeds United FC, at the turn of
the year. However, it was Newcastle United FC
signed him on the day the young Eastham turned professional, 19 May 1956 for £9000, and
on 18 November 1960, Arsenal FC signed him for £47,500. Following
the triumphant World Cup Finals, Eastham signed for Stoke City AFC for
£30,000 on 18 August 1966. During the 1967, Stoke, including Eastham, were
members of the United Soccer Association, known as Cleveland Lakers. Into
the new decade, Eastham loaned to South
African club, Hellenic FC of Cape Town, from 18 April 1970 for three
months. He returned to become their player~manager from
19 February 1971 until the end of the summer. He returned to the Stoke City
team in October 1971, and then following their League Cup triumph, Eastham
once again returned to manage Hellenic for their 1972 season, before
returning to take up an appointment at Stoke, where he
remained until announcing his retirement on 11 February 1975, after
failing to recover from injury in his final league match on 29 September
1973. |

Management
Career |
Club(s) |
Whilst
contracted at Stoke City AFC, Eastham was player~manager, and then
manager, at Hellenic FC during the summer seasons between 1970-72, until
he accepted the post of player/assistant
manager on 1 December 1972, a position he held until he retired from playing
on 11 February 1975. From the 1974-75 season, England manager Don Revie
put Eastham and Gordon Banks in charge of the under-23 team. He became caretaker manager of
Stoke City on 21 March 1977 following the resignation of Tony Waddington.
Despite being unable to save the side from relegation, he was appointed to the role full-time
on 25 May 1977 until his sacking on 9 January 1978. |
