Club Career

Club(s) Colin started playing football with Hawkshaw St. Mary's FC before signing as an amateur at Burnley FC in August 1948. He signed as a part-time professional on 15 October 1948.  While on National Service, he was loaned to Headington United FC for thirty Southern League appearances, during the 1950-51. He signed as a full-time professional at Burnley in July 1952. He remained at Turf Moor until his injury-induced retirement in the 1961 close season. He broke his leg in a Football League representative match in Dublin, March 1959, and never recovered. McDonald played in 201 League matches. He returned to playing with Altrincham FC in January 1965 after various coaching roles.

Beyond England

After retiring through injury in 1961, Colin coached and managed Wycombe Wanderers FC from August 1961, and then chief scout of Bury FC in October 1961 until October 1968, which included a brief period returning to football with Altrincham FC. He then became chief scout at Bolton Wanderers FC from 1968. He returned to Bury FC a year later, becoming their Administrative Manager and then General Manager from May 1970. Subsequently had youth coaching posts with Oldham Athletic FC and Tranmere Rovers FC, leaving the latter in February 1987. - An English Football Internationalists' Who's Who. Douglas Lamming (1990).
