The first of four trial matches pitted a team of players selected from clubs in Lancashire and Yorkshire against a strong Sunderland team containing ex-youth internationals, Irwin and Lackenby. There were four changes to the FA's originally-announced line-up. W.Evans and W.Schofield were required by Liverpool for an FA Youth Cup-tie on the following evening, and were replaced by Wales and Haspell, respectively. George Sharples replaced Jimmy Nicholson, who was from Belfast and went on to play for Northern Ireland, and Hooper replaced Ian Moir, who was from Aberdeen. In addition, Fountaine replaced Dave Wilson as reserve. Two more changes were then made before the game, with Wood coming in for Sharples, who was playing for Everton in the FA Youth Cup on the same evening, and Trevor Hockey (a future Welsh international) for Leslie Lea.

The Rest made two changes to the announced line-up. Bill Williams was a late replacement for Derek Hemstead on the evening before the game, and 15-year-old Alan Baker (who scored the winning goal) was also a late addition, replacing Adrian Williams (assuming that Baker played in his usual inside-right position). 16-year-old Jantzen Derrick had made two second-division appearances for Bristol City, but opted to play in the trial, rather than make a third league appearance, at Rotherham, on the same day. Peter Mulligan had made seven appearances for Barnsley in the third division.

After drawing their two home games, England's three-year hold on the British title was ended, but they secured the runners-up spot with their first-ever victory in Northern Ireland. Bob Gaddes made his debut in goal and it was more successful than his league debut for Portsmouth, two weeks earlier, when they went down 6-1 at Charlton Athletic in the second division. He never made another league or international appearance.
England are the runners-up to Scotland in the thirteenth AYC.

England were initially due to face Yugoslavia on this date in their opening match of the UEFA Youth Tournament in Oporto, but their opponents, along with East Germany and Hungary, were unable to obtain visas to travel to Portugal. With three groups now consisting of only three teams each, and consequently, nine teams now only having a guaranteed two tournament games each, instead of the usual three, friendly matches with teams from the other affected groups were hastily arranged on the days when they had previously been scheduled to play, and one-off trophies were provided for them to contest.

A large 24-man squad had been selected with ten chosen to attend the two-day training session only, in the days before the game, but four of them ended up in the team. Six of the original team line-up became unavailable. Freddie Goodwin (replaced by Smithson), Bobby Thomson (by Ford, from the training squad) and Ken Knighton (who was in the training squad) were withdrawn so that they could play on the same day in Wolverhampton Wanderers' FA Youth Cup-tie at Chelsea, who may have withdrawn Ron Harris from the training squad. Meanwhile, Aston Villa withdrew Alan Baker (replaced by Etheridge, the amateur team's captain) and John Sleeuwenhoek (by Cross, from the training squad) so that they could play on the same day in a first-division game at Arsenal (which they won 5-4). Barnsley, fighting against relegation from the third division, withdrew Eric Brookes so that he could play in an important fixture at Bristol City on the same day, but he missed the game in the end because of a groin injury. He was replaced in the England team by Frank Clark, from the training squad. Manchester City withdrew Neil Young, so that he could play against Sheffield United in a first-division match on the same day. With George Armstrong moving from the left to the right-wing to replace him, Garth Lee came in to take Armstrong's position, only to then drop out and be replaced by Robson, from the training squad. The remaining original members of the training squad were Ralph Brown, David Court, Terry Heath and John Sissons, with John Standing added as a replacement. Phil Beal, John Charles, Bill Gates, Roger Peters and Barry Starks also appear to have been present, according to a photograph. Clark and Etheridge were the only amateurs in the team, whilst Armstrong, Bennett, Butler, Cross, Ford, Montgomery and Robson had all made Football League debuts. West German goalkeeper, Sepp Maier won a World Cup winners' medal in 1974, but he was beaten by a shot from an earlier World Cup winner, in Martin Peters.
"Difficulties in connection with the Tournament beset the selectors throughout. At first it was understood that professional players would be eligible and a strong team was chosen including many with League experience. Then news came from U.E.F.A. that the competition was strictly amateur, and the selectors had to start all over again. Very little time was left and a hurried search was made for players able to obtain time off from work or school. On reaching Rumania it was decided two days before the first match was due to be played that professionals would, after all, be allowed to play. Needless to say, England found themselves at a great disadvantage." - The F.A. Yearbook 1962-63. p94

Peter Bishop and Roy Massey (who was in higher education) were both 19 when they played for the England youth team.

Two weeks later, on 19 January, it was switched to the Baseball Ground, Derby, but once again, postponed at two days' notice because of the weather. Without another available club ground to use, it was eventually played on a Sunday morning at England's training ground, without paying spectators, after their first international, a week earlier in Scotland, had been postponed. The teams were the same as had been announced in late-December, although play was split into three half-hour sessions and numerous changes were made with players swapping sides to test out new formations. It was the second half-hour session when the first two goals were scored.

This match was scheduled to take place at Leeds United's Elland Road, but the pitch was waterlogged and it was hastily switched to the nearby ground of East End Park Working Men's Club of the West Yorkshire League. The win proved enough to secure a fourth successive title for England, though without the lure of continental opposition, more players were signing professional terms at the age of 17, rather than delaying, and as a result, fewer of the remaining amateurs in the England side were now going on to play in the Football League.

England retained their title with yet-another four-goal thrashing of their opponents. John Sissons had also scored in the previous year's final. Four weeks later, at Wembley, he became the youngest FA Cup Final scorer when he equalised for West Ham United and added a winners' medal to his collection at the expense of Preston North End's Howard Kendall, who, after skippering the youths to success, at 17, became the youngest player to appear in an FA Cup Final. David Sadler had also appeared in the previous year's UEFA Youth Tournament, but not in the final.
England are again the winners, for a third time, of the seventeenth UEFA Youth Tournament. J.Black, Tony Brown, T.Dawkins and J.Greenhoff were unused squad members.

He replaced John Radford, who was busy scoring for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on the same evening. Radford's position in the England youth team went to Bond. In the first half, Glover took the place of Vincent, who took his position as a half-time substitute, whilst Glover moved to right-half and Smith was withdrawn. A very young Sunderland side included future England youth and full international, Colin Todd, Colin Suggett, who had made his amateur youth international debut in the previous month, and Bobby Kerr, who would captain Sunderland to their sensational FA Cup win, eight years later.

A fixture arranged as a warm-up before the UEFA Youth Tournament, but like the fixtures in the 1970s, these games against Scotland were not designated official youth internationals. They were each billed as being played by a Youth XI and no caps were awarded. Tony Hazell was originally listed to play at right-back, but Wright was brought into the squad (possibly to replace Andy Burgin) and took that position, with Hazell coming on at half-time. Radford's leg injury ruled him out of Arsenal's first-team for over five months. He, thus, missed the UEFA tournament and did not receive an international youth cap.
"Efforts to arrange at least one international match against a Continental team were frustrated when, owing to bad weather, a match against Switzerland was called off at the last minute. This game had been substituted for one against Spain which was cancelled when it was found that both England and Spain were in the same group in the Tournament." - The F.A. Yearbook 1965-66. p90

After a succession of trial matches against Football League youth teams, England's young professionals made an impressive start to their international season. Of the starting line-up, only the full-back pairing of Bentley and Craggs had yet to make an appearance in the Football League. Graham Turner was in the squad, but as a regular for Wrexham in the fourth division, he was released to play against Rochdale on the same night.

Another unofficial warm-up match against the Scots was a sobering experience for an England team hoping to reach a fourth successive UEFA Youth Tournament Final, but it proved to be a realistic indicator of their chances. When Summerill came on as a substitute at half-time, he played in his usual left-wing position, whilst Bartley moved to the opposite wing.
