"7-1 eclipse for England
"LE HAVRE. Thursday. —
England's B team was beaten 7—1 by France's B team this evening—the
highest score ever recorded against England in international professional
football. The crowd jeered the England team. A member of the F.A.
Council said: "Our performance was disgraceful." "

"England "B" outplayed
— FRENCH GAIN 7—1 TRIUMPH
"FRANCE ESPOIR (French
Hopefuls) dominated an England "B" team in a Soccer match, played at Le
Havre yesterday, and won by seven goals to one.
"Playing a fast lively
game, the French side took full advantage of some weak defence by the
England side. "The French superiority was clearly established before
half-time, when they gained a 3—0 lead. Curyl opened the account of
6min., Cesari adding a second 5min. later, and Piantoni going through
6min. from the interval. "Gregory, in the England goal, found himself
in difficulties against the sharp shooting French forwards. "France
continued their hard attacking game in the second half, adding to their
score in the fifty-fourth minute when Gaulon scored from a free-kick.
Six minutes later Barlow, England's left-half, scored his side's solitary
goal during one of England's rare attacking movements. France put on
three more goals through Domingo (seventy-fourth min.), Piantoni
(seventy-sixth min.) and Kopa (eighty-ninth min.)." - Bradford
Observer
"Lively forwards rout
'B' team
— FRANCE 7 ENGLAND 1
"LE HAVRE. Thursday.—France Espoir (French
Hopefuls) gave England's "B" team a severe drubbing here tonight and with
a little luck might have had more goals to show for their superiority. By
clever, precise and swiftly made passes they bewildered the England
defenders who were often drawn out of position.
"Taking advantage of bad
marking and weak covering, the French team established a clear superiority
before half-time when they were three goals ahead. In each instance the
scorer was in an unmarked position and Gregory in the England goal found
himself in difficulties against the sharp-shooting French forwards.
"France continued their hard attacking game in the second half. Their
fourth goal came direct from a free kick and the other three followed at
regular intervals. England had a few periods of attack, but their forwards
were not clever enough to penetrate a sound defence and their goal scorer
was Barlow, the half-back, whose goal came between France's fourth and
fifth."
