All information is
complete to and including England's last match, the third of the 2003-04 season,
against Liechtenstein on 10 September 2003.
Diary
Friday, 25
January 2002
- The European Championship qualification draw puts second-seeded
England in Group Seven with Turkey, as well as Slovakia, FYR Macedonia and
Liechtenstein. But no fixtures can be finalised.
Monday, 11 March 2002
- In İstanbul, the Group Seven representatives fail, after
five hours, to find a resolution in creating a fixture list.
England
wanted both matches with Turkey played early in the campaign, while
Turkey wanted its home match against England played later.
Eventually the teams agreed to let UEFA resolve the fixture list by
drawing lots.
Thursday, 28 March 2002
-
UEFA
conduct a random draw. It produces
precisely the
fixture arrangement Turkey
had
wanted. The last match of the qualifying
campaign will see England visit Turkey.
Friday, 4 April 2003 -
The good
news for England is that the Turkish Football Association have decided
not to play October's return clash in Galatasaray's notorious Ali Sami
Yen stadium. The bad news is that they have chosen the
equally-intimidating İstanbul ground of Fenerbahce instead.
The Turkish FA
do not have to confirm the venue until 60 days before the October 11
clash but reports in the İstanbul media have said the 50,000 capacity
Şükrü Saracoğlu had been earmarked for the game.
That
is likely to increase the chances of the English FA refusing their
ticket allocation for England fans in a bid to avoid crowd trouble.
Sunday,
5 October 2003 - The Football Association have confirmed that the squad
announcement has been delayed for 24 hours.
Monday,
6 October 2003 - Sven-Göran Eriksson delays the squad
announcement again, awaiting the results of Michael Owen's injury.
Tuesday, 7 October 2003 - Eriksson has finally announced
his 23-man squad
for England's final qualifying match against Turkey. Rio Ferdinand is left out
due to him missing a routine drug test.
Wednesday, 8
October 2003 - Darius Vassell is called into the squad as cover for the
injured Michael Owen. The Liverpool striker still remains in the squad
in a bid to beat his shin injury.
