All information is
complete to and including England's last match, the second of the 2003-04 season,
against Macedonia on 6 September 2003.
Diary
Friday, 25
January 2002
- The European Championship qualification draw puts second-seeded
England in Group Seven with Turkey, as well as Slovakia, FYR Macedonia and
Liechtenstein. But no fixtures can be finalised.
Monday, 11 March 2002
- In İstanbul, the Group Seven representatives fail, after
five hours, to find a resolution in creating a fixture list.
England
wanted both matches with Turkey played early in the campaign, while
Turkey wanted its home match against England played later. Eventually the teams agreed to let UEFA resolve the fixture list by
drawing lots.
Thursday, 28 March 2002
-
UEFA
conduct a random draw. It produces
precisely the
fixture arrangement Turkey
had
hoped for. The last match of the qualifying
campaign will see England visit Turkey
in October 2003.
Monday, 16 June 2003 -
England's
final home Euro 2004 qualifier against Liechtenstein will be played at
Old Trafford.
The Football
Association's director of marketing and communications Paul Barber
said
"We're
delighted to be staging another senior international at Old Trafford.
Manchester United
have already shown their commitment to and support for the FA and our
national teams by hosting a number of international matches at all
levels, as well as FA Cup semi-finals and FA Youth Cup finals.
We are pleased to be
offering the greatest number of fans the opportunity to witness
England's final home Euro 2004 qualifier, and we look forward to a
fantastic atmosphere in one of Europe's finest stadiums."
Wednesday, 27 August 2003 - Sven-Göran Eriksson announces a 24-man squad
for the European Championship qualification games against Macedonia and Liechtenstein
next month.
Wednesday, 3 September 2003
- Rio Ferdinand is ruled out of the match to face Macedonia on Saturday.
He will be reassessed after the weekend to determine his availability
for the Liechtenstein match.
Tuesday, 2 September 2003
- Steven Gerrard, suffering with an ankle injury, and Trevor Sinclair, who has
a swollen knee, both withdrew
from the squad to face Macedonia, but are hopeful to return for the match
against Liechtenstein. Rio Ferdinand has a kidney infection so Eriksson
brings in Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson as cover.
Saturday, 6 September 2003 -
Wayne Rooney
re-wrote the history books to become England's youngest scorer at the
tender age of 17 years and 317 days as England came from behind to win
the crucial Euro 2004 qualifier in Macedonia. Georgi Hristov punished a
woeful first-half display to give Macedonia a deserved lead.
But Rooney equalised early in the second half - and captain David
Beckham kept alive England's hopes of automatic qualification for next
summer's finals with the winner from the penalty spot. Eriksson also
deserves credit for a bold attacking formation in the second half -
but once again he will be concerned by a dreadful defensive display.
