against Croatia on 20 August 2003.
Diary
Friday, 25
January 2002
- The European Championship qualification draw puts second-seeded
England in Group Seven with Turkey, as well as Slovakia, FYR Macedonia and
Liechtenstein. But no fixtures can be finalised.
Monday, 11 March 2002
- In İstanbul, the Group Seven representatives fail, after
five hours, to find a resolution in creating a fixture list.
England
wanted both matches with Turkey played early in the campaign, while
Turkey wanted its home match against England played later.
Eventually the teams agreed to let UEFA resolve the fixture list by
drawing lots.
Thursday, 28 March 2002
-
UEFA
conduct a random draw. It produces
precisely the
fixture arrangement Turkey
had
hoped for. The last match of the qualifying
campaign will see England visit Turkey
in October 2003.
Wednesday, 27 August 2003 - Sven-Göran Eriksson announces a 24-man squad
for the European Championship qualification games against Macedonia and Liechtenstein
next month.
Wednesday, 3 September 2003
- Rio Ferdinand is ruled out of the match to face Macedonia on Saturday.
He will be reassessed after the weekend to determine his availability
for the Liechtenstein match.
Tuesday, 2 September 2003
- Steven Gerrard, suffering with an ankle injury, and Trevor Sinclair, who has
a swollen knee, both withdrew
from the squad to face Macedonia, but are hopeful to return for the match
against Liechtenstein. Rio Ferdinand has a kidney infection so Eriksson
brings in Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson as cover.
