Diary

Friday, 29 November 2002 - The Football Association announced that England will play Croatia in a friendly match next season. The venue has yet to be decided, although England owe Croatia a visit.

Saturday, 25 January 2003 - The Croatian Football Association have also announced that their national side will play a friendly away match against  England on 20 August 2003.

Tuesday, 25 February 2003 - The Football Association's plan of a friendly match against Croatia for early next season in preparation for the European Championship 2004 qualifiers against FYR Macedonia and Liechtenstein in early September, is likely to take place at Portman Road in Ipswich.

Thursday, 29 May 2003 - The Football Association have confirmed that England will play Croatia in a friendly match next season, but said the date and venue still had not been finalised. 

Wednesday, 18 June 2003 - The Football Association finally confirm that England's friendly match against Croatia will take place at Portman Road in Ipswich on 20 August 2003, kick-off 8pm.  Ipswich has never hosted a senior England match, although Portman Road has been the venue for England Youth matches.  The FA's Director of Marketing and Communications Paul Barber said:  "This will be the 13th different stadium used since we started taking our senior matches around the country. Since February 2001 the England team has played in the North East, the North West, the West Midlands, the East Midlands, the South Coast, Yorkshire, London and now East Anglia."

Monday, 30 June 2003 - Gary Neville was sent home from Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States with a pulled hamstring he picked up in the 4-0 victory against Celtic on 22 June in Seattle.  He will need at least three weeks to recover, but it is likely he will miss England's early season friendly.

Sunday, 13 July 2003 -  The Football Association have announced that all general sale tickets for the friendly match against Croatia were sold within two and a half hours of  ticket lines opening this morning.

Wednesday, 16 July 2003 - England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson said David Beckham may miss the friendly match against Croatia to give him time to settle at his new club, Real Madrid.  "We haven't made any decisions about David yet, but we'll see how things go for David and we'll make that decision just before we pick the squad."

Thursday, 17 July 2003  - Former Ipswich Town and England manager Bobby Robson will be the Football Association's guest of honour at Portman Road.  Robson was in charge of Ipswich for 13 years before beginning his eight-year tenure as England manager in 1982.

Sunday, 27 July 2003  - A scan revealed Wayne Rooney, who fell awkwardly in Everton's 3-2 friendly match victory over Rangers at Ibrox Park in Glasgow yesterday, has suffered ankle ligament damage and will be out of action for a month.  He will miss Everton's opening Premiership matches and England's friendly. He is expected to be fit for the European Championship qualifiers against FYR Macedonia and Liechtenstein in September.

Friday, 15 August 2003 - Eriksson names a 24-man squad that does include Real Madrid's David Beckham.

Monday, 18 August 2003 - Owen Hargreaves is forced to withdraw from the squad after being unable to shake off a groin strain picked up in his side's Bundesliga win over VfL Bochum.

Tuesday, 19 August 2003 - Sol Campbell and Jonathan Woodgate are forced through injury to withdraw from the squad and return home for treatment.  Matthew Upson is called up as a replacement.
