    Match Report by Mike Payne

Two goals from Joe Cole gave England a vital three points in this, the first match in their World Cup qualifying group.  At times it was scrappy, and overall the performance was a laboured one from England, but this game was a potential banana skin and in the end Fabio Capello will be delighted with the three points.

Andorra set their stall out from the start to defend in numbers, have no intention of attacking and to frustrate England for as long as they could.  For the first 45 minutes they succeeded and England, infuriatingly had no answer to the problem.  Predictably, they enjoyed the bulk of possession but too many players were off form.  Wayne Rooney messed up one half chance after Theo Walcott teed him up and Frank Lampard had a shot touched around a post by goalkeeper Koldo, although the referee then gave a goalkick.  It was obvious that manager Capello would have to change things at the break, and he did.  He brought on the extra power of Emile Heskey and the more direct skills of Joe Cole for Jermaine Defoe and Stuart Downing respectively.  That move was to pay dividends.

Within four minutes of the second half starting England, at last, were ahead.  Lampard's free-kick was side-footed by Joleon Lescott to Joe Cole, and the replacement volleyed home, much to the visitors relief and delight.  Just six minutes later it was game over as Rooney sent a delightful pass through to Joe Cole and once again he scored with the minimum of fuss.

The Chelsea midfield player had certainly made a big impact and he has given the manager some food for thought ahead of the big game with Croatia coming up.  In the meantime England have left Spain with the job done, and really that is all that can be said of this poor match.
