All information is
complete to and including England's last match, the eleventh of the 1973-74 season,
against Yugoslavia.
Diary
Thursday, 12 September 1974 - England's new boss Don Revie has called
up a squad of 85 players for his first get together in Manchester on 22
September. There are seven players from West Ham and six each from Newcastle
United, Liverpool and Queen's Park Rangers. Notable absentees from the list
are Tottenham's Martin Chivers and Peter Osgood. The players named form the
basis of England's attack on the World Cup in Argentina in 1978.
Full squad
selection here:- The Football Association later removed Nottingham Forest's John
Robertson "We have had the club on to say that he was born in Scotland," said
an FA official.
Thursday, 19 September 1974 - Dr. Neil Phillips, vice-chairman of
Middlesbrough, has resigned as medical adviser to the England football team.
His decision comes after discussion to devote more time to his family.
Sunday, 22 September 1974 -
Full co-operation is what Don Revie was promised by the Football Association
as he attempts to take England back to the top at a squad 'get-together' at
the Hotel Piccadilly in Manchester today. Revie's future plans include each player on cash incentives. £5,500-per-man
for winning the European Championship and another £5,000 for qualifying for the 1978 World Cup Finals.
It is understood that for the first time, there will be a bonus system with
the usual £100 match fee, plus £100 for a draw and £200 for a win. The Senior International Committee, headed by Dick Wragg and included Matt
Busby have agreed to back every proposal. The get-together itself cost the FA £3,000
and Revie has declared he would like to hold at least one get-together a month
for the rest of the season. In addition, he intends to issue complimentary
tickets to the wives and girlfriends of the England players and give his men
VIP treatment-including chauffeur-driven limousines to drive them back to
their clubs after the matches. New 'casual gear' uniforms with England badges
are already on order. Peter Osgood has been added to the squad. He got the call on
Friday after scoring four goals in his past two matches for Southampton. Also
added to the squad is Stoke City's Denis Smith, but Liverpool's Phil Thompson
is out after being carried off yesterday with a suspected cartilage injury.
Missing from the 'talk-in' were Kevin Beattie, Kevin Keegan, David Watson and
Colin Todd, who all had legitimate reasons for their absence. Stan Bowles
arrived late because of his wife's illness.
Tuesday, 22 October 1974 - Don Revie has named his first England squad.
They will face Czechoslovakia next week in a European Championship preliminary
match. It includes five of the game's outstanding young players amongst the
24. But as congratulations pour in on Kevin Beattie, Gerry and Trevor Francis,
Alan Hudson and Willie Maddren, there was a realisation that four other
players could be no more than spectators at Wembley. However, Don Revie has
said that there is still a future for Martin Chivers, Malcolm Macdonald,
Rodney Marsh and Martin Peters. Alan Ball misses out because of a lack of
match fitness.
Friday, 25 October
1974 - Colin Todd has gone into hospital to have
a lump removed from his groin. It does mean that his chances in partcipating
in next week's match are limited.
Saturday, 26 October 1974 - Following a
return to form in his match today, Alan Ball has been recalled to the England
squad. Although he was stretchered off with an ankle injury after the
final whistle, he had done enough to secure Aresnal's league victory over West
Ham United FC. Don Revie was looking down from the Director's Box. But
injuries have ruled out Allan Clarke and Colin Todd.
Monday, 28 October 1974 - Don Revie dropped a massive hint as to his
team selection plans when he included Gerry Francis and Alan Ball in his
'senior' side for a full scale training game at Wembley today. Revie divided
the 21 players training today into two teams, and spent ten minutes speaking
earnestly to the side containing Francis, Ball and captain Emlyn Hughes.
Also in the side was the young Kevin Beattie, but his chances of playing on
Wedneday are slim, as he was an obvious replacement for Norman Hunter, who was
having treatment at Arsenal for a swollen ankle. The senior side was Clemence;
Madeley, Hughes, Weller, Watson and Beattie; Ball and Bell; Worthington,
Channon and Gerry Francis up front. Trevor Francis has also had to withdraw
from the squad after picking up a tendon injury.
