Diary

Friday, 5 December 2003 - England were placed in a half-British group for qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, which took place in Frankfurt this evening and will involve the Three Lions playing home-and-away fixtures with five other nations in total, beginning two months after the conclusion of Euro 2004. The other countries are Northern Ireland, Wales, Poland, Austria and Azerbaijan.

Tuesday, 13 January 2004 - Austria will provide the first opponents for England as they begin the journey to the World Cup Finals in Germany in 2006. England are in a group alongside Wales and Northern Ireland as well as Austria, Poland and Azerbaijan.

Sunday, 28 August 2005 - Sven-Göran Eriksson has named a 25 man squad. The contingent includes Liverpool full-back Stephen Warnock, who earns a first ever call-up to an England squad.  Joining Warnock in the squad is Chris Kirkland, who has done well at the start of a season-long loan at West Bromwich Albion.  He is one of three goalkeepers in the party, with Tottenham Hotspur's Paul Robinson and Norwich City's Robert Green the others.  The strength in depth in the centre of England's defence is highlighted by the inclusion of Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Jamie Carragher and Matthew Upson.  With Gary Neville injured, Charlton's Luke Young will be delighted to be involved with an England squad again after his experience on the summer tour of the United States.  Captain David Beckham, Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard and Joe Cole of Chelsea are all in the travelling party as is Kieran Richardson, who is re-called into the squad.  Tottenham Hotspur's Michael Carrick, another player who made a name for himself on the United States Tour, also retains his place.  Joining regular strikers Michael Owen, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney and Andy Johnson is Charlton Athletic's Darren Bent, who was first called-up for England's friendly match away to Denmark earlier this month.

Tuesday, 30 August 2005 - John Terry will miss the World Cup qualifiers due to a knee injury.  Terry, who was in line to partner Rio Ferdinand in defence, picked up the injury playing for Chelsea on Saturday.  Zat Knight has been drafted in as cover. Terry's place is likely to go to either Liverpool centre-half Jamie Carragher or Birmingham's Matthew Upson with Sol Campbell also out.  Skipper David Beckham and midfielder Steven Gerrard also missed Tuesday's training session. Beckham has a sore foot which is not considered serious and he is expected to join in training at Arsenal's London Colney headquarters on Wednesday.  Gerrard was not able to take part in the main session because of his thigh injury, although he was receiving treatment from England physiotherapist Gary Lewin.  Gerrard is a doubt after missing the Super Cup last Friday with a calf injury.

Michael Owen has agreed to sign for Newcastle United from Real Madrid.  The 25-year-old will have a medical on Tuesday before signing a four-year deal. The fee is believed to be a club record £17m for the Magpies who have beaten off competition from Owen's former club Liverpool from to land the forward.

Wednesday, 31 August 2005 - Jermaine Jenas joins Tottenham Hotspur for £7m.

Thursday, 1 September 2005 - Eriksson is set to try out a new formation for England's World Cup qualifier in Wales on Saturday.  Eriksson will play a 4-5-1 system, with influential captain David Beckham in a deep lying midfield position behind Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.  Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips will be the wingers and striker Wayne Rooney will plough a lone furrow up front with Michael Owen suspended.  It is understood that the plan was discussed at a meeting between Eriksson and senior players on Tuesday.

Friday, 2 September 2005 - Steven Gerrard has been confirmed as fit for the World Cup qualifier against Wales tomorrow.  Gerrard has recovered from a calf injury and is set to take his place in a new look England formation featuring Luke Young as right-back.  Young looks set to be given the task of marking Ryan Giggs.  Phil Neville had been tipped to replace injured brother Gary for the game at the Millennium Stadium.  But Young was given the nod in the first team in training on Thursday and is now favourite to start the match.

Saturday, 3 September 2005 - England beat Wales 1-0.
