Diary

Sunday, 25 November 2007 - England will meet Croatia again after the European Qualification Draw for the 2010 World Cup was made today in Durban, South Africa. The Three Lions were also drawn with Ukraine, Belarus, Andorra and Kazakhstan.

Wednesday, 14 January 2008 - In Zagreb, Croatia, the fixture list is finalised for the UEFA Qualification Group Six.

Monday, 18 May 2009 - Portsmouth goalkeeper David James will undergo a shoulder operation on Wednesday  that will rule him out of England's World Cup qualifiers in June.  James missed Pompey's 3-1 win over Sunderland and will now be unavailable for England's games against Kazakhstan and Andorra. "It's an injury I've been carrying for 18 months.  I wanted to wait until Portsmouth were safe, but unfortunately the recuperation period is long.  I'm going to miss a couple of England games, which is unavoidable.  Having started every game for Mr Capello, I'd have liked to have continued that, but I'm making the best of a bad situation. It's important I get back and start pre-season well and get myself in 100% shape for next season and be part of a successful England team."

Thursday, 21 May 2009 - Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing will also miss England's two World Cup qualifiers because he needs surgery on his right foot. The 24-year-old was injured in a tackle by Stiliyan Petrov during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. "He is out for two or three months at least," said Boro's assistant manager Malcolm Crosby. Downing had to be substituted after only 23 minutes following the challenge with Petrov.

Friday, 22 May 2009 - Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips has become the latest player to be ruled out of England's two World Cup qualifiers through injury.  Wright-Phillips has missed the last six weeks with a knee problem and suffered a reaction when he returned to training this week.

Sunday, 24 May 2009 - Fabio Capello has named a 24-man squad.  Manchester United defender Gary Neville is recalled to the England squad - his first call under Fabio Capello - while Jermain Defoe returns after missing the first three England games of 2009 through injury.  Shaun Wright-Phillips, who was thought to need knee surgery, proved his fitness for Manchester City today and is also named in the squad.

Sunday, 31 May 2009 - Manchester United's Michael Carrick will miss England's upcoming World Cup qualifiers with a foot injury.  His place in the squad has gone to Aston Villa winger James Milner, with the 23-year-old being promoted from England's Under-21 squad.  Midfielder Carrick has not started a competitive game for England since the loss to Croatia in 2006.  The former Spurs star, who played all 90 minutes of Manchester United's Champions League defeat against Barcelona, was unlikely to be first choice for his country.  But his absence leaves England coach Fabio Capello with only three recognised central midfielders - Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry - for the two games.

Monday, 1 June 2009 - Defenders Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole both sat out training as a precaution.  Chelsea's Cole took a kick in the FA Cup final win over Everton on Saturday, while Manchester United's Ferdinand is resting a long-standing calf injury.  Both are expected to train on Tuesday or later in the week.

Tuesday, 2 June 2009 - Rio Ferdinand has withdrawn from the England squad because of injury and Bolton Wanderers centre-back Gary Cahill has been called up.  Ferdinand has failed to shake off a calf injury in time for Saturday's World Cup qualifier but could return for the game against Andorra next week.  Fabio Capello turned to Cahill following an injury to Phil Jagielka.  Cahill now joins Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott as the players hoping to partner captain John Terry at centre-back.  The 23-year-old said he was delighted with the call-up to the full squad.  "I've had a good season and I've worked really hard.  I've been in the provisional squad twice before and then this third time I was included once again, so I'm obviously delighted to get the call."

Left-back Ashley Cole, who picked up a knock on Saturday, has trained ahead of the trip to Almaty and should play.

Gareth Barry has signed for Manchester City FC from Aston Villa FC for £12 million.

Thursday, 4 June 2009 - Reports coming from the training camp suggest a bust-up between Garth Barry and Gary Cahill.  Cahill allegedly flooring Barry with a scything tackle.
