Diary

Tuesday, 14 October 2003 - Owen Hargreaves reveals he has been suffering mysterious pain for the previous six months and has been unable to perform at 100 percent.  "I have some kind of problem in the pelvić area.  Everything involving the ball has been difficult, passing, shooting. I haven't been able to do much for months now, I just avoid it whenever possible."  The mystery ailment first appeared in March and has not cleared up since, defying all attempts at diagnosis.  Hargreaves has consulted a number of specialists and every possible treatment has been explored.  Hargreaves reluctantly accepts he may be forced to take a break from playing.

Wednesday, 15 October 2003 - Sven-Göran Eriksson will start his preparations for the Euro 2004 finals at Old Trafford, where England will face Denmark in a friendly next month. Having already achieved automatic qualification for next summer's tournament, the England team have been spared the potential torment of the play-offs. However, Eriksson will still take up the international date and the FA have organised a friendly against Denmark on Sunday, November 16. "Denmark are a passionate football nation with a proud tradition. They won the European Championships in 1992 and their qualification for Euro 2004 shows their current team is very strong. The match will be a very good chance to prepare the squad for next year's championships and test ourselves against high-level opposition." Eriksson said.
It has been arranged for the Sunday as neighbours Scotland and Wales are playing on the Saturday in the European Championship qualification play-offs.

Friday, 24 October 2003 - Rio Ferdinand will be left out of the next England squad. Although he is allowed to play for Manchester United, the FA believe it would send out a confused message if the £30million defender was recalled having been pulled out of the squad to face Turkey in the Euro 2004 qualifier earlier this month.
There is no chance of him getting a hearing into his missed drugs test before the match against the Danes and a date might not be fixed until December.

Tuesday, 28 October 2003 - Paul Scholes has had an operation following reoccurrence of his groin problem.  "He is likely to be out for three to four weeks."  said an Old Trafford spokesman.

Tuesday, 4 November 2003 - Michael Owen is struggling with another ankle injury, different to the injury that forced him to miss the Turkey game.  His manager, Gerard Houllier is hoping a week of treatment will see him return to fitness.  But as Houllier will only use Owen on an intermittent basis, the forward is unlikely to figure against Denmark as he aims to regain full fitness.

Monday, 10 November 2003 - Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson has announced a 23-man squad for England's friendly match against Denmark at Old Trafford this weekend.
Sol Campbell picked up an ankle injury in Arsenal's Premier League defeat of Tottenham Hotspur. Kieron Dyer has a niggling hamstring which caused him to miss Newcastle United's match with Chelsea at the weekend, and Owen Hargreaves is not yet match fit to earn a Bayern recall against Borussia Dortmund, so all have been omitted from the squad.
However, those that have been included are David Beckham, who is nursing a bruised lower back received during Real Madrid's 4-1 win over Sevilla over the weekend, and Wayne Rooney, who has the flu.

Tuesday, 11 November 2003 - The luckless Gareth Southgate, recalled to the squad yesterday in the absence of Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell, was forced to withdraw with a thigh injury.  A late call was promptly given to Anthony Gardner, who had not previously been named to a senior England squad.  Gardner became the squad's third uncapped player,  joining Glen Johnson and Scott Parker, and is one of two, with Johnson, to receive a first call to the senior squad.

Thursday, 13 November 2003 - Sven-Göran Eriksson has called up Leeds United forward Alan Smith, only to see him sent packing a few hours later because criminal assault charges might be brought against him for tossing a plastic bottle back into the crowd.  Eriksson then called on Southampton's James Beattie to replace the suspended Smith, but the FA actually considered sending him home, too, because he was in the middle of serving a drink-driving ban. They ultimately decided not to suspend Beattie because the courts already had dealt with his case.
