Diary

Thursday, 5 January 2012 - England will play Norway and Belgium in their final two friendlies before the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine. On Saturday, 26 May, England travel to Oslo to take on Norway in the same Ullevaal Stadion in which they famously lost a World Cup qualifier 2-1 in 1981.  On 2 June, Belgium visit Wembley before England head to their base in Krakow to prepare for their opening Euro 2012 game against France on 11 June. "I'm very happy with these two games. Since the draw in December we have been able to work towards these matches and the appropriate opposition.  In the draw we face one of the hosts, Ukraine, which will be a difficult atmosphere to replicate, but looking at the styles of France and Sweden I feel these games are a good preparation for us." said England boss Fabio Capello.

Tuesday, 1 May 2012 - Roy Hodgson has been appointed England manager on a four-year contract. The West Bromwich Albion boss succeeds Fabio Capello after talks with the Football Association on Monday and Tuesday.

Wednesday, 2 May 2012 - Darren Bent could recover from an ankle injury in time for Euro 2012, says his Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish. But the 28-year-old, who had surgery on 5 March after rupturing his ankle ligaments, is unlikely to play in Villa's last two Premier League games. "I don't believe there is a chance of him playing for Villa again this season." The former Sunderland player, who suffered the injury at Wigan Athletic in February, is hoping to play in his first major tournament with England after failing to make the squad for the World Cups in 2006 and 2010.

Wednesday, 9 May 2012 - Roy Hodgson will name his Euro 2012 squad on 16 May. He then has until 29 May to make alterations to the party for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, by which point final lists must have been submitted to Uefa. England's players are scheduled to report for a four-day training camp in Spain on 21 May.

Friday, 11 May 2012 - Chris Smalling will miss Euro 2012 with a groin injury. Smalling suffered the injury during last Sunday's 2-0 victory over Swansea City.  Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed "Chris has suffered a bad injury. It is a groin muscle injury and he'll miss the European Championship."

United striker Danny Welbeck will miss the final game of the season at Sunderland with an ankle injury but "should be fit for the Euros."

Monday, 14 May 2012 - Harry Redknapp says midfielder Scott Parker's Achilles injury could rule him out of the England squad for this summer's European Championship. Parker missed the 2-0 win over Fulham - a victory which secured Spurs a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. "If he had to have an operation it would be long term, so we will have to wait and see how he is. If it doesn't clear up he wouldn't be fit.  He is going to have an injection on it on Monday and they hope with six or seven days rest it will be OK."

Redknapp was able to play down fears that Kyle Walker could also be struggling for the European Championship. The right-back was already playing with a broken toe and suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's victory but Redknapp added: "Kyle will be OK for the Euros."

Wednesday, 16 May 2012 - Andy Carroll has been included in England's 23-man squad for Euro 2012, but there is no place for Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand. The 33-year-old is a surprise omission but Chelsea captain John Terry has been named by boss Roy Hodgson. There are call-ups for uncapped Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy. Liverpool winger Stuart Downing and Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck have also been picked. In addition to Carroll, Welbeck and Rooney, Hodgson will take Jermain Defoe as a striking option. Tottenham forward Defoe has not played a competitive match for England since September 2010.  Steven Gerrard is the Captain.

Thursday, 17 May 2012 - Roy Hodgson has admitted that Tottenham's Scott Parker is a doubt for Euro 2012. The 31-year-old, who has an Achilles tendon injury. Hodgson said: "Scott's had an injection which will probably take a week for us to see if it's been successful or not. He could still miss out, although from what I'm hearing, it won't be a problem. He's very confident. We've got until the 29 May to finalise the squad and I may still have a call to make on that one if it's looking dubious, if there is a doubt. I'll have that call to make. Do I take the risk and go with a doubt and hope for the best or do I say 'I'm sorry, I've selected you in my 23 players, but now I have to remove you'? But I'm very confident that won't happen. I'm very optimistic. The doctor spoke to Scott Parker and Spurs on Wednesday, so I'm confident - but I can't give a guarantee." Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has been placed on stand-by and would be called into the squad if Parker was ruled out.

Manchester United's Michael Carrick, who has not played for England since May 2010, was not considered because he told the Football Association he did not want to be a bit-part player. However, he is willing to help the national side should the need arise.

Sunday, 20 May 2012 - Wayne Rooney played through the pain barrier at the end of the season and is now being given a week's rest before he joins up with the squad for Euro 2012.  Roy Hodgson revealed that Wayne Rooney has been carrying a minor toe injury over the past couple of weeks and will not feature in the upcoming friendly against Norway. Rooney and the selected English members of Chelsea's Champions League-winning team will miss the pre-Euro 2012 trip to Oslo on May 26, but will join up with the rest of the squad on May 29. Hodgson told The Sunday Telegraph: "He has a minor injury. I won't go into it because Alex Ferguson kept it quiet and so will I, but it is a minor injury which will benefit from a few days' rest. He won't be involved in the Norway game and whether he is involved for Belgium I don't know. He will certainly be with us by then but whether I select him or not I don't know at this stage. He's not coming to Oslo so he will join up with us the same time as the Champions League players, on Tuesday May 29."

Tuesday, 22 May 2012 - Liverpool's Martin Kelly will join the England squad today as additional cover for the friendly in Norway. Kelly, who has been capped for his country at Under-21 level, will return to his club after the game in Oslo. England are short of right-back options due to injuries to Kyle Walker and Chris Smalling.  The players underwent their first training sessions with Hodgson today and tomorrow before flying out to Oslo on Friday.  The Chelsea contingent of John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard - plus stand-by player Daniel Sturridge - have been given extra time off after the club's Champions League heroics. They will not report for duty until next Tuesday when England link-up at their accustomed Hertfordshire base ahead of the clash with Belgium at Wembley on June 2.
The main injury concern of the players reporting on Wednesday continues to be Tottenham's Scott Parker. He was troubled by an Achilles injury during the latter part of the domestic campaign and he will be assessed by the England medical team.

Wednesday, 23 May 2012 - Scott Parker was fit to take part in training today. Hodgson must decide whether he thinks Parker is fit enough to travel to Poland and Ukraine by Tuesday. Danny Welbeck and Glen Johnson sat out training in Manchester City's Etihad Stadium as a precaution.  In a small-sided match, Hodgson played Phil Jagielka alongside formererton team-mate Joleon Lescott, with Phil Jones in a full-back role.

Thursday, 24 May 2012 - It has been announced that goal-line technology will be tested at Wembley when England host Belgium in a friendly on 2 June. Hawk-Eye, a camera-based system, will be used by independent testers during England's final game before Euro 2012. But the match officials will have no access to data and the trial will have no impact on any contentious goal-line decisions.

Friday, 25 May 2012 - John Ruddy will miss Euro 2012 after breaking his finger in training yesterday and has been replaced by the uncapped Jack Butland. "Ruddy was assessed by the England medical staff and will not be able to be part of the tournament. He will travel with the squad to Norway on Friday and watch the game on Saturday evening, but return to his club after arriving back in England."
