Friday, 25 January 2002 - The European Championship qualification draw puts second-seeded England in Group Seven with Turkey, as well as Slovakia, FYR Macedonia and Liechtenstein. But no fixtures can be finalised.

Monday, 11 March 2002 - In İstanbul, the Group Seven representatives fail, after five hours, to find a resolution in creating a fixture list.  Eventually the teams agreed to let UEFA resolve the fixture list by drawing lots.

Thursday, 28 March 2002 - UEFA conduct a random draw settling all fixtures.

Thursday, 11 July 2002 - The opening game on the road to the Euro 2004 Finals is against Slovakia and will be played in Bratislava.

Wednesday, 14 August 2002 - England's first home game of their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign against Macedonia will take place at Southampton's new St Mary's stadium, the Football Association revealed today.

Thursday, 15 August 2002 - A scan revealed Wes Brown fractured his right ankle and he will be out of action for at least three months, until mid-November, which rules him out of the Portugal friendly in September and England's first two European Championship qualifying matches against Slovakia and FYR Macedonia in October. Brown picked up the injury in Manchester United's first leg European Champions League qualifying loss to Zalaegerszeg of Hungary.

Friday, 6 September 2002 - The BBC have secured the rights to televise live England's overseas Euro 2004 qualifiers against Slovakia on October 12 and Liechtenstein on March 29 next year.

Saturday, 5 October 2002 - Rio Ferdinand is sidelined for at least a month after having an exploratory knee operation. His manager, Alex Ferguson said "The problem has been bothering Rio for some time now, and we have decided to have the operation now to leave him free for as much of the season as possible."
There were signs of a breakdown in communications between United and the Football Association last night as a senior FA spokesman, Paul Newman, said: "We knew nothing about this. Sven will meet with United's medical staff tomorrow."
Eriksson confirmed that David Seaman would return for England on Saturday. He will today name a squad of 23 players for the two matches, and has confirmed that Seaman, who was omitted for the preparatory match against Portugal four weeks ago, will earn his 74th cap. The England coach does not normally disclose any of his choices in advance, but made an exception to quell the speculation caused by the 39-year-old goalkeeper's recent fallibility.

Sunday, 6 October 2002 - Eriksson has chosen his squad to take on Slovakia and Macedonia in the opening Euro 2004 campaign. He includes the uncapped Paul Robinson and David Thompson.

Tuesday, 8 October 2002 - Sven-Göran Eriksson has revealed that Sol Campbell is a doubt for Saturday's Euro qualifying opener.The Swede's main concern is that a stomach bug has hit Sol Campbell and the Arsenal centre-back is a doubtful starter for the match in Bratislava. Having already lost Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand for the Euro 2004 opener on Saturday following his knee operation, the news will come as a blow to the team.

Wednesday, 9 October 2002 - Captain David Beckham and defender Ashley Cole missed training today due to niggling injuries but are expected to be fit for the match. England are due to fly to Bratislava tomorrow.
