September
2009
- England will play Brazil in their final match of 2009, with Fabio Capello's
side taking on the Confederation Cup winners in Qatar in November. With
both teams having qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the friendly will be
played on the first of two dates set aside in the international calendar for
World Cup playoffs. The match will take place on Saturday 14 November in
the Qatari capital Doha, in a rematch of the first England game at Wembley in
2007. The arrangement that saw Brazil face England in their opening game at the
new Wembley stadium two years ago included the contractual obligation to play
the reverse match within three years.
Sunday, 8 November
2009
- Sunderland striker Darren Bent has been named in the England squad to face
Brazil in a friendly on 14 November. Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock
and Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone have also been called up by England
manager Fabio Capello. The match in Qatar is the penultimate game before
Capello names his provisional World Cup squad. Bent, who has eight Premier
League goals, will be looking to shine in the absence of the injured Emile
Heskey. Sunderland forward Bent, 25, has made one appearance under
Capello, while Warnock, 27, made an eight-minute substitute appearance in
Trinidad last year and Huddlestone, 22, is still to make his senior debut.
The England manager has once again overlooked Manchester United's Michael Owen
and there is no place for defender Ashley Cole, who is returning from injury.
Heading the long list of injuries for England are Rio Ferdinand and Steven
Gerrard, along with Aaron Lennon and Carlton Cole. David Beckham's
participation will depend on the whether LA Galaxy win their MLS
Conference semi-final against Chivas USA.
Tuesday, 10 November
2009
- Glen Johnson has pulled out of the England squad after picking up a slight
injury. The 25-year-old right-back sustained the problem during the
Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Birmingham on Monday. Johnson, who has struggled
with calf and groin injuries this season, joined up with the squad on Tuesday
and underwent a routine recovery session. But it has now been decided that
he will return to his club for treatment. Johnson's exit leaves Wes Brown
as the only right-back still in the squad, although Shaun Wright-Phillips or
James Milner could drop back from midfield.
Wednesday, 11 November
2009
- Aston Villa defender Luke Young announces his international retirement.
It comes after Capello had enquired about him as a replacement for Johnson.
Thursday, 12 November
2009
- Frank Lampard is set to leave the England camp and fly home from Qatar after
picking up a thigh injury.
Friday, 13 November
2009
- Captain John Terry could miss the friendly with an ankle injury. Fabio
Capello remains confident the 28-year-old Chelsea defender will be fit, but
vowed not to take any risks. If Terry is absent, Manchester United's Wayne
Rooney will captain the side. Rooney, Terry and Gareth Barry are the only
first-team regulars remaining in Capello's squad for the game at the Khalifa
International Stadium. England may be especially careful with Terry after
his Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard flew home on Friday with a thigh injury.
The midfielder will be out for two to three weeks with a torn muscle. But
Capello said: "He was running on his own and twisted his ankle. I am confident
he will be fit for Saturday. The doctors think so but I won't take a risk.
If he is not fit, he will not play."
