Wednesday, 23 August 2017 -
England's record goalscorer and most capped outfield player,
Wayne Rooney has retired from international football after turning
down the chance to be part of the squad for next month's World Cup
qualifiers. the Everton striker was asked by England boss Gareth
Southgate to be involved against Malta and Slovakia. "Every time I was
selected was a real privilege but I believe now is the time to bow
out," said the 31-year-old. The former Manchester United captain
scored 53 times in 119 internationals.
Thursday, 24 August 2017 -
Gareth Southgate announces his squad for the upcoming qualification
matches. Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah and Leicester defender
Harry Maguire have been included for the first time. There is also a
return for Arsenal's Danny Welbeck, who last featured eighteen months
ago.

2017 - All players from all levels report to St. George's Park.
Tuesday, 29 August 2017 - Jordan
Pickford is the first casualty. A Football
Association statement said: "Having reported to St George's Park on
Sunday evening, the 23-year-old underwent an assessment on a muscle
injury sustained playing for his club. After discussions between
England and Everton medics, it was decided it was in the player's best
interests to return to Finch Farm for further treatment."
Kieran Tripper and Phil Jones also both missed today's training
session, however, both are expected to participate tomorrow. Under-21
goalkeeper Freddie Woodman joins in with the senior training session.
Wednesday, 30 August 2017 - Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain has a medical with Liverpool FC doctors at St.
George's Park. Kieran Trippier again misses training but Phil Jones
has resumed.
Thursday, 31 August 2017 -
As the England squad prepare to fly out to Malta, Kieran Tripper again
misses training and returns to his club at Tottenham Hotspur. Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain is announced as a Liverpool FC player.
Friday, 1 September 2017 - England
moved a step closer to World Cup qualification as they overcame a
night of frustration to beat Malta. Despite 78% of first-half
possession in Attard, Gareth Southgate's side went in goalless at the
break against a team which had lost all six Group F matches. Harry
Kane finally broke the deadlock but the match was in the balance until
Ryan Bertrand's 85th-minute drive. Danny Welbeck and Kane both scored
in injury time as England finally asserted their dominance.
Saturday, 2 September 2017 -
The England team have one final training session in Malta before
terurning to England.
Sunday, 3 September 2017 -
The 26-man squad return to training at Tottenham Hotspur's training
facilities in Enfield as Gareth Southgate reveals that Henderson will
retain the captaincy against Slovakia, and both Joe Hart and Phil
Jones keep their places.
