Diary

Saturday, 30 July 2011 - England will face Montenegro, Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, and San Marino in Group H when they bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil. The draw was made this afternoon in Rio. "It is not an easy draw," said Fabio Capello. "You have to be really, really focused and play every game like a final - but that will be another manager's job."

Wednesday, 23 November 2011 - England's FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying fixtures have today been finalised, following a meeting between all of the Group H member associations in Warsaw. The Three Lions will begin their campaign in Moldova in September 2012.

Sunday, 23 September 2012 - John Terry has announced his retirement from international football. The defender, who has won 78 caps, was cleared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in July of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game. But the Chelsea star, 31, still faces a Football Association disciplinary hearing over the matter from today. Terry said the FA's decision to pursue charges against him meant his position with England had become "untenable".

Thursday, 4 October 2012 - Stoke's Ryan Shawcross and Tottenham's Aaron Lennon have been called into the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers in October. Uncapped centre-back Shawcross, 24, fills the space vacated by John Terry. Winger Lennon returns after a two-year absence. Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster, 24, is promoted to the senior squad for the first time, while Wayne Rooney returns.

Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson has apologised to Rio Ferdinand after discussing the defender's England future with fellow London Underground passengers. The England coach admitted saying the Manchester United centre-back, 34, would not be in his latest squad, a day before it was announced. But he denied saying Ferdinand's England career was over.

Norwich City striker Grant Holt says he has given up on being picked for England and believes other players have been denied chances by Roy Hodgson. Holt, 31, was the Premier League's second-highest English scorer last season, but was not included in the national squad for Euro 2012. "I gave up on that, I think I'll never be in it. Roy's come in and picking his players. When two friendlies came up [against Norway and Belgium] and I wasn't included it was ridiculous to be honest. He hasn't given anyone opportunities - people like Nathan Dyer and Danny Graham from Swansea didn't even get a look in, but that's life."

Saturday, 6 October 2012 - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Kieran Gibbs is a major doubt for England's World Cup qualifiers this month. The left-back, 23, came off in the 56th minute of Arsenal's 3-1 win over West Ham with a thigh strain.

Frank Lampard was also forced off in the Chelsea's win over Norwich City at Stamford Bridge. He was withdrawn midway through the second half after starting and scoring in a 4-1 victory.  Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo was not sure after today's game whether he would be fit. "We'll have to assess him tomorrow and then see. He felt a little bit of a problem behind his knee, so for precaution, we took him off."

Monday, 8 October 2012 - Jonjo Shelvey and Ryan Bertrand have been called into England's squad for this month's World Cup qualifiers, with Kieran Gibbs pulling out of the squad. Gibbs, 23, has withdrawn after sustaining a thigh strain. Chelsea's Bertrand, 23, is a direct replacement for Gibbs as England prepare to play San Marino on 12 October and Poland on 16 October. Liverpool midfielder Shelvey, 20, has been handed his first England call-up.

Tuesday, 9 October 2012 - On the day of the opening of St. George's Park in Burton, the new £105 million FA Centre of Excellence, also England's training base, Ryan Bertrand misses training because of a sore throat. Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Jermain Defoe also missed training, but were involved in the warm-up beforehand.

It is also confirmed that Ashley Cole is available for selection afte he apologised to the FA for his ill-advised tweet regarding the John Terry disciplinary case.

Thursday, 11 October 2012 - Frank Lampard and Ryan Bertrand have pulled out of the England squad for Friday's World Cup qualifier against San Marino at Wembley. Midfielder Lampard, 34, has a knee injury and full-back Bertrand, 23, an illness, described by Bertrand as "swollen glands in my neck...and constant headache for 3 days now and freezin cold". The Football Association confirmed they will return to their club for treatment over the weekend. They will rejoin the England squad on Sunday for assessment ahead of the game in Poland on Tuesday.

Wayne Rooney has been confirmed as Captain for the match against San Marino. Gerrard is suspended and Lampard has withdrawn through injury.

Friday, 12 October 2012 - Hodgson leaves out the players that have received a yellow card, despite which, his team defeat San Marino 5-0.  Two goals from Rooney and Welbeck each and a first for Oxlade-Chamberlain.  Theo Walcott is taken off after seven minutes after he suffers a fierce challenge by the San Marion goalkeeper. He is now a major doubt for the Poland match after spending the night in hospital.

Saturday, 13 October 2012 - Theo Walcott has been ruled out of Tuesday's World Cup qualifier in Poland with a chest injury. Walcott had to stay in hospital on Friday night after he was poleaxed by San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini. The winger will return to his club Arsenal for further treatment.

Sunday, 14 October 2012 - Frank Lampard and Ryan Bertrand are also out of England's World Cup qualifier in Poland with injury and illness respectively. Both missed Friday's win over San Marino with the same ailments and it was decided not to risk them. The squad fly out to Warsaw on tomorrow morning.

Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson trained with the England squad today. The 20-year-old right-back was given his first taste of senior international duty by Roy Hodgson during the session at Arsenal's London Colney training ground. Jenkinson will not travel with the squad to Warsaw. However he could be in line to make his England debut in next month's friendly against Sweden in Stockholm. Jenkinson has a Finnish mother and has played for Finland at U17, U19 and U21 level.

Tuesday, 16 October 2012 - Despite the National Stadium with a retractable roof, the roof remains open during a downpour, delaying the match by an hour, and then by a day, as the match is postponed until tomorrow.
