All information is complete
to and including England's last match, the first of the 2018-19 season, against
Spain on 8 September 2018.
Diary
Wednesday, 18 April 2018 -
England will take on both Switzerland and United States later this year as the
autumn schedule is finalised. With
England already having dates in the calendar against Croatia and
Spain, there were two dates left to fill. The Swiss will visit on 11
September.
Tuesday, 28
August 2018 - Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill are stepping aside
from international football to allow manager Gareth Southgate to bring
younger players in. But both players say they are "not shutting the
door completely". Leicester City striker Vardy says he first
told Southgate of his intentions at the World Cup in Russia. "This has
been on my mind for a while. I'm not getting any younger and you can
see, to be fair to the gaffer, he wants to make it more youthful,
which obviously had its benefits during the World Cup." He has told
Southgate he also wishes to concentrate on his club football and his
family. "Gareth said that he felt I still had a lot to offer, and
we've not shut the door completely. If the worst came to happen anderyone was injured, then obviously I wouldn't say no." Chelsea
defender Cahill said: "I can see it is now going to a younger
generation and I think it is the perfect time for me to take a step
back," Cahill told Chelsea TV. I've been hugely honoured to play for
my country and I would never shut the door. I've said that if there
are injuries in the future and I'm needed to come and play then, of
course, I'm available."
Thursday, 30 August 2018, 2.00pm - At St. George's Park, Gareth Southgate
names his first England squad since the World Cup Finals. Southgate
has retained the bulk of the Finals squad, with 18 of the 23 keeping
their places. Joe Gomez, Adam Lallana and James Tarkowski all return,
as does goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. Their is also a recall for Luke
Shaw. The five that miss out are the aforementioned Cahill and Vardy,
Phil Jones and Nick Pope miss out through injury and Ashley Young, who
has been left out to allow the younger members to participate.
Southgate: "With us only being three games into the season, I felt
some continuity was important. Those who were with us in the summer
deserve the right to go again."
Monday, 3 September 2018 - 22 of the
23 man squad arrive at St. George's Park. The only member who has not
is Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, who has withdrawn because of a
back problem. Southgate has no plans to call up a replacement.
Tuesday, 4 September 2018 - Dominic
Solanke has joined in the first day of training, whereas Adam Lallana
has returned to Liverpool to have a groin strain assessed by staff.
Also missing from training was goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Southgate
has called up the uncapped Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli as
cover. His call up comes just nine days after making his Premier
League debut, after starting the season behind first choice keeper,
Fabri.
Thursday, 6 September 2018 -
A day after training was held behind closed doors, today's
training included two members of the under-20 squad. Eddie Nketiah and
Marcus Tavernier.
Saturday, 8
September 2018 - England 1 Spain 2: England suffered their
first home loss since March 2016, and first competitive home loss since
November 2007. Their Nations League campaign opened with defeat as
they were beaten by Spain in their first match since the World Cup.
Marcus Rashford gave England the perfect start with an 11th-minute
strike from Luke Shaw's pass but Spain responded with an almost
instant equaliser thanks to Saul Niguez's low finish. Rodrigo Moreno
then took advantage of poor marking at a free-kick to score the winner
from close range after 32 minutes. England suffered a blow just after
half-time when Shaw was taken off on a stretcher with a head injury
following an accidental collision with Dani Carvajal but they rallied
late on and could have earned a draw.
Sunday, 9 September 2018 - After
only seven outfield players were involved in training at St. George's
Park, Southgate has drafted in Leicester City's Ben Chilwell and
Demarai Gray into the squad from the under-21s. Both receive their
first ever senior call-up. Luke Shaw, however, who suffered concussion
in the 47th minute of the match against Spain yesterday, remains at
St. George's, but will return to Old Trafford tomorrow.
Monday, 10 September 2018 - As Ben
Chilwell and Demarai Gray arrive at St. George's Park, it is announced
that Dele Alli has withdrawn because of a slight muscle strain. He
will return to Tottenham Hotspur later today. The 22 players take part
in training this morning before leaving for Leicester. In the press
conference later in the day, Southgate confirms Harry Kane will be
rested and that Eric Dier will captain the side. As much as nine
changes are expected for the next match with the manager hoping to
give much of the squad a run out.
